11. SPECIES - organisms that can mate and produce offspring 12. EGG– female sex cell (has 1/2 the chromosome # or 23) 13. SPERM – male sex cell (has 1/2 the chromosome # or 23) 14. MITOSIS – cell division; makes two of the exact same cells (daughter cells) 15. MEIOSIS – cell division; makes sex cells (1/2 the chromosome #)

16. ZYGOTE - fertilized egg 17. COMPETITION–one or more organism trying to use the same resources 18. DIVERSITY – organisms changing 19. EVOLUTION – how organisms change over time 20. FOSSIL – preserved remains of a once living plant or animal

21. CONSUMER- an organism that feeds on other organisms 22. PRODUCER– an organism that makes its own food (ex. Plant) 23. DECOMPOSER– organism that breaks down dead organisms or waste (ex. Bacteria or fungus) 24. PHOTOSYNTHESIS – way plants make food (CO 2 plus H 2 0 and sunlight = sugar and O 2 And water vapor) 25. SOLAR ECLIPSE –the moon is between the sun and the Earth and the sun is blocked. (only in new moon phase)

26. LUNAR ECLIPSE - the moon passes into the Earth’s shadow (during full moon) 27. AXIS – what the Earth is rotating on. It is tilted at 23 ½ degrees 28. REVOLUTION– movement of the Earth around Sun (causes seasons) 29. ROTATION – spinning of Earth on axis (causes day and night) 30.ORBIT– path of the Earth around the Sun

31. ATMOSPHERE – layer of air around the Earth 32. HYDROSPHERE – layer of water on Earth 33. LITHOSPHERE – layer of solid rock on Earth 34. CLIMATE – average of weather conditions over time 35. WEATHER– day to day conditions of the atmosphere

36. EARTHQUAKE – shaking of the Earth’s crust 37. SEDIMENTARY– rocks - compacted and cemented sediments 38. IGNEOUS – rocks-melting and solidification of magma or lava 39. METAMORPHIC– rocks -other rocks changed by heat and pressure 40. WEATHERING– breakdown of rock

41. STATES OF MATTER – solid, liquid, gas, plasma. Based on molecule arrangement 42. ELEMENT– pure building blocks of all matter; made of atoms 43. COMPOUND – 2 or more elements chemically combined 44. MIXTURE– 2 or more things physically combined 45. PHYSICAL CHANGE – a change that does not change the composition

46. CHEMICAL CHANGE – a change that makes a new substance 47. DENSITY – how compact the molecules are; mass divided by volume 48. PERIODIC TABLE – a list of all known elements 49. POTENTIAL ENERGY– stored energy 50. KINETIC ENERGY – energy of motion

51. FORMS OF ENERGY – heat, light, sound, electrical, chemical, mechanical, nuclear 52. LAWS OF MOTION – 1. body at rest/body in motion 2. more mass = more force 3. action/reaction 53.EFFORT– use of physical power 54. SIMPLE MACHINES – makes work easier; changes size or direction of force 55. SPEED – distance travelled divided by time it took
