3 Pronouns – Basic Definition  Pronoun - A word used in place of one or more nouns or pronouns.  Ex: When Mrs. Frantz came into class, she was holding the biggest cup of hot chocolate I have ever seen.  Ex: The driveway and sidewalks are covered with snow; they should be shoveled.

5 Pronoun Cont.  Antecedent- The word or word group that a pronoun stands FOR.  Ex: The dog lost his collar.  DOG is the antecedent of his.  Ex: Ashlyn, call your mother.  Ashlyn is the antecedent of your.

6 Pronoun Cont.  Sometimes the antecedent is not stated because the reader can understand the meaning of the sentence without it. For example: “Call your mother.”

7 Pronoun Cont.  Pronouns must agree with the antecedent in number and gender.  Marie and Collin took their chairs with them to the game.  There are two antecedents, so the pronoun must be plural  Ex: Janessa was wearing her coat at the mall.  Janessa is a girl, so the pronoun must be feminine.

15 Personal Pronouns A personal pronoun refers to: ~the one speaking (first person), ~the one spoken to (second person), ~ the one spoken about (third person).
