1 Information Technology Development Laboratories, Inc. A joint endeavor of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University and the Virginia Tech Foundation being considered to enable agile information technology initiative developments of strategic interest to the university and its constituencies.

2 Four Critical Challenges 1.Our first challenge relates to the fact that innovation in information technologies is part of our university’s DNA. There exists a threat and potential cost to our university of significant control and interference in this arena by state government. 2.Second is meeting the demand for more sophisticated support, especially for researchers, and for more advanced infrastructure (in the context of the rapid technology obsolescence rate). 3.Third is financing our information technology requirements, especially in the context of increased internal competition for fewer available dollars; 4.Fourth, we have experienced, and will continue to have, missed opportunities for capital asset acquisition & development, and for generating external sources of revenue.

5 Focus on Serving University Interests Act as an incubator and knowledge transfer vehicle for information technology development. Test and prototype new services opportunities. Privatize information technology services in discrete stages with the initial emphasis on the biggest opportunities at manageable risk. Enable more rapid deployment of innovative, emerging new communications infrastructure serving the campus for public safety, research, and education. Create a closer coupling between academia and private sector best practices for emerging technologies.
