There are two kinds of light – the glow that illuminates, and the glare that obscures – James Thurber

The Challenge We have, just in front of all of us, the global challenge of promoting innovative solutions to huge energy supply, be it industrial or lighting needs We have, just in front of all of us, the global challenge of promoting innovative solutions to huge energy supply, be it industrial or lighting needs

Man is known for his dividing act: He drew the lines on the borderless earth. He divided the regions as urban and rural. He divided the areas as electrified and non- electrified. In this energy supply chain, is there any energy balance? Alas…

We all want the cream to rise. Then, let’s provide the opportunities to all. The opportunities need not come in huge form. They could be as small as a torch. They could be as little as a solar mini lamp – the lamp that provides the GLOW that ILLUMINATES. We all want the cream to rise. Then, let’s provide the opportunities to all. The opportunities need not come in huge form. They could be as small as a torch. They could be as little as a solar mini lamp – the lamp that provides the GLOW that ILLUMINATES. What a multi-million dollar solar power plant can do in terms of AWARENESS, this small lamp will do but also in a large scale and faster!! And, that’s why I call small is not only big, beautiful but profitable too. Profitable to ALL!!! Yes

We do not have to do too many things! We do not have to do too many things! We do not have to do big things either. Just give them a small light. This small light would enlighten them. Magically enough! And, they, sure, will rise. They will rise, on their own. This is what I consider empathy. And…

We get the mineral water cream and let the dirty water trickle down. This is the potable water of the billions of people world over. In exactly the same way, we get the white petrol to fly our aero planes and let the dirty kerosene to trickle down. And, this becomes the poor man’s fuel! The cream and the garbage

96 billion liters of Kerosene is being burnt annually just for basic lighting needs by the people in the developing countries [Mills 2002] 96 billion liters of Kerosene is being burnt annually just for basic lighting needs by the people in the developing countries [Mills 2002] Kerosene is a killer fuel: Kerosene is a killer fuel: It’s a slow poison - It produces unsafe fumes It’s an instant killer - It poses fire hazard in the millions of vulnerable thatched huts. The poverty fuel - Kerosene

See this tiny news item! Twins burnt to death by candle Ludhiana: Two twin infants were burnt to death here after a burning candle fell on their bed while mother was away, police and hospital sources said. Luv and Kush were burnt to death when a candle reportedly fell on their bed while the mother had taken their elder ailing sister to a doctor. 10 Sun The ultimate Power in the sky Silicon Most abundant material on the earth crust Solar The smart energy technology of 21 st century The 3s solution

To make a kerosene-free world, To make a kerosene-free world, at least, in case of basic lighting use

To provide clean and safe solar lighting solutions To provide clean and safe solar lighting solutions to the really needy people in the developing and under developed countries

Thomas Edison “We will make electricity so cheap that only the rich will burn candles”

The plight of over 2 billion people – more than the world’s population in Edison’s time - who 100 years later still, have no access to electricity.

I’m proud that our sole mission embodies Edison’s seemingly futuristic statement. Our unique aim is to light up the unlit households. It’s this sense of urgency the very core facet of our solar mini lamp project. It’s this aspect of the practical lighting project - small is big - I find to be most innovative.

The founder D.T.Barki born in a small village in Karnataka Graduated in B.Tech(Electronics & Com) from India’s premier engineering institute KREC (now NIT) in South Canara, Karnataka About 12 years of seamless exposure to solar technology (solar cells and modules) in BHEL, Bangalore Independent project experience by setting up of world class solar cell and module lines (22% of country’s solar infrastructure)…RES, Photon etc Experience in providing solar lighting solutions to the really needy people in large scale: Ø 1000 street lights in the mountainous districts of Orissa, a most backward state of India Ø Instrumental in leading the entire solar industry to support AP Govt’s (Vision2020) 100,000 solar lantern schemes to the rural people including DWCRA women

Started in 1998 Launched the proven solar mini lamp in 2001 Sold 45,670 lamps so far At least 31,456 solar lamps are in Kerosene Hot-spot areas Provided light in some of the hamlets, which couldn’t have got modern light in the next 50 years (Mahabubnagar among other districts of AP, India and 100 households of un-electrified villages in the hilly regions of Bhutan City labour-hamlets living in subsistence level get the solar lighting. These slum-dwellers live under below the survival levels of basic amenities right in the heart of the cities. City hawkers, who burn enormous amount of kerosene for lighting are addressed with the solar lamps. A unique programme called “Solar Seeding” is undertaken. Solar Study Lamp campaign to promote solar lamps in the schools is a massive business model to cover all the schools not just a demonstration but as the sale of solar lamps in the organized manner. Micro-enterprise building in rural regions

It addresses the lighting needs of 2 billion people, who otherwise have no way to get to use any modern light in the coming decades. Organized, innovative, global networking and focused approach to reach the remote far-flung regions Self sustainable business model combined with socio-economic impact on the lives of rural and urban poor. Definite and Long-term goals A dedicated infrastructure building solely to meet the vast solar lighting project across the globe.

It’s essential to create a self-sufficient infrastructure to address the large-scale deployment of solar lamps. More so, when the solar industry keeps busy itself addressing the large power requirement. Amorphous silicon module manufacturing facility is being considered for Joint Venture between a Dutch company

Acquire the complimentary strengths of the overseas partner(s) to address the massive and sparse global lighting requirements Build state-of-the-art manufacturing facility to meet the demand in terms of international quality and global reach To bring in funds from overseas partners Market expansion due to regional co-operation (Africa, SAARC countries) Continued R&D supports for instant adoption of newer technologies and/or improvements
