6 Background Long term wish of Horndean Parish Council to reinstate the Goddess In 1991 Cllr David Eaton began a campaign, but was unable to raise enough funds

7 World War One Centenary World War One Centenary and national commemoration events offer us the opportunity to: gain additional funding raise public awareness restore the statue as per the original residents wishes

10 Restoration process Small, clay model for our approval Goddess will be made from Portland Stone Manufactured by robot, finished by hand Total time to manufacture approx 4 months Raised arm to be made separately Sword will be made of stainless steel J Rotherham will supply a video of the process

12 Placing the statue Scaffolding in place for about 5 days Horndean Square car park will need to be closed 25 ton crane to manoeuvre the statue into position Arm and sword fitted to the statue after it has been erected

13 Raising awareness Jeff Travis of The Portsmouth News to run series of articles as we go through the process Event at Merchistoun Hall at which we’ll display the model of the statue and historical photos 2 people with relatives named on the memorial have agreed to write a pocket history of their relative – we hope for more Horndean Junior School are keen to be involved We hope to provide the public with regular updates via social media (Horndean Matters blog, Facebook and Twitter) Display boards around the village

14 Possible dates for dedication Saturday 28 June: Armed Forces Day Monday 21 July: 94 years after the original dedication Monday 28 July: 100 years after the outbreak of World War One

16 “They whose names are recorded on this memorial were numbered among those who, at the call of King and Country, left all that was dear to them, endured hardness, faced dangers and finally passed out of sight of men by the path of duty and self sacrifice, giving up their own lives that others might live in freedom. “Let those that come after see to it that they are not forgotten.”
