Summarize the effect of geography on the development of the Egyptian culture. Explain how Egypt united into a kingdom. Describe Egyptian religion, social structure and technology. Explain the decline of the Old Kingdom.

4 Importance/ Facts on the Nile River
From the highlands of East Africa to the Mediterranean Sea, the Nile flows 4,100 miles making it the longest river in the world. The Nile didn’t flood yearly like the Tigers and Euphrates did in Mesopotamia. Pg. 36 Geography Skillbuilder Questions 1+2. Remember the unique direction the Nile flows and location of Upper and Lower Egypt.

5 Traveling the Nile River
The Nile River provided a reliable system of transportation between Upper and Lower Egypt. The Nile flows North so Northbound boats simply drift with the current. No need to set up sail. The winds of Egypt blow from North to South, carrying sailboats against the rivers current. This ease of travel helped unify Egyptian villages and trade.

6 Egyptian Leaders Egyptian kings were known as pharaohs.
Pharaohs- A king of ancient Egypt considered a god as well as a political and military leader. Pharaohs were in charge of Egyptians religion and government. Egyptians believed pharaohs bore sole responsibility for the kingdoms well-being. Theocracy- A form of government in which rule is based on political and religious authority.

7 Pyramids vs. Ziggurats Pyramids- The resting place for a pharaoh after death. How are pyramids different than ziggurats?

8 Mummification Mummification- Royal and elite Egyptians bodies were preserved through mummification which involves embalming and drying the corpse to prevent it from decaying. Book of the Dead- A collection of scrolls, prayers and magic spells intended to guide the soul into the afterlife. Pg. 39- Skillbuilder Questions 1+2

9 Hieroglyphics Translated in Greek meaning “ sacred carving”
Simple pictures were the earliest forms of writing in Egypt. Hieroglyphics was written on stone or clay.
