8 RPM/Belgium N.V. - Version 2 - 04.06.2007 - MONILE GB Monile ® Liquid  Water:  Needed for the chemical reaction of the cement  Acrylic co-polymer:  Gives a much better Water/Cement ratio (influence on shrinkage and porosity), higher chemical resistance, more strength and flexibility.  The acrylic co-polymer is not subject to saponification. Saponification = under wet conditions and high pH-value (like fresh concrete) an ester can transform back into an alcohol and an acid. Esters like PVAC are very sensitive to saponification. They can’t be used on fresh concrete.  Additives: Needed for the right curing properties  Antifungi: Needed for hygienic behaviour Components

9 RPM/Belgium N.V. - Version 2 - 04.06.2007 - MONILE GB  Mixture for cement:  Needed for the mechanical properties and curing properties  Fine quartz filler:  Needed as a carrier for the pigment and for the low porosity of the mix.  Pigment:  Inorganic based pigments needed for the colour  Quartz:  Dry quartz needed for the mechanical strength and the possibility to apply 10 mm thickness Monile ® Composite Components physical bond coming from the reaction between H 2 O and cement polymer quartz

10 RPM/Belgium N.V. - Version 2 - 04.06.2007 - MONILE GB Properties  Compressive strength:  Is an index of the ability of a substance to carry a load without flowing or rupturing.  Monile ® has a compressive strength of 70 N/mm 2 (700 kg/cm 2 ), MORE THAN TWICE THAT OF AVERAGE CONCRETE!  The compressive strength is much influenced by the right size of used quartz, cement and used polymer.

11 RPM/Belgium N.V. - Version 2 - 04.06.2007 - MONILE GB Properties  Tensile strength:  Is an index of the ability of a material to hold together under tension.  The square of tensile strength is an indication of the impact and abrasion resistance.  The tensile strength of Monile ®, is TWO TIMES THE AVERAGE TENSILE STRENGTH OF CONCRETE !  The tensile strength is influenced by the type of polymer and its concentration.

12 RPM/Belgium N.V. - Version 2 - 04.06.2007 - MONILE GB Properties  Chemical resistance:  Monile ® is not affected by exposure to blood, animal urine, animal faeces or lard, edible oil, mineral oil, greases, diluted chemicals commonly used in the food industry and alkalis (except in high concentrations).  Resistance to thermal shock:  Under thermal shock, the expansion and contraction of Monile ® is equal to that of concrete. No loss of bond occurs.  After 29 cycles of 30 minutes interval with exposure to water at 80°C and 15°C => no change is observed.

13 RPM/Belgium N.V. - Version 2 - 04.06.2007 - MONILE GB Properties  Resistance to temperature fluctuation:  After 12 cycles of exposure to cooling from temperature to -40°C during 2 periods of 3 hours with 2 hours pause in-between, the Monile ® remained unchanged.  Health regulations:  Monile ® complies with the requirements of USDA and EEC health authorities.  Large areas can be placed without joints. Only structural and construction joints need to be taken through the Monile ® screed. This maintains high standard of hygiene.

14 RPM/Belgium N.V. - Version 2 - 04.06.2007 - MONILE GB Properties  Safety in use:  Many floors have excellent antislip properties as long as they are dry. As soon as they are wet or greasy they become very slippery and dangerous. Monile ®, due to its inherent slip resistant properties, remains safe and non-skid even when covered by water, grease, fat…  Easy maintenance:  Monile ® resists to the normal detergents and alkalis used in conjunction with hot water or steam for the daily or more frequently maintenance of the floors.

15 RPM/Belgium N.V. - Version 2 - 04.06.2007 - MONILE GB Properties  Durability:  The best way of analysing the durability of a material is to look at old installations. The oldest in Europe dates from 1962 an is still in good condition.

18 RPM/Belgium N.V. - Version 2 - 04.06.2007 - MONILE GB Application  The surface should be clean and cohesive.  The concrete should have a minimum compressive strength of > 30 N/mm².  Degreasing in case of oils and fats. In case of light contamination, steam cleaning with detergents can be very efficient. Never use solvents, because they tend to push the oil and fat into the concrete. In case of serious contamination, flame cleaning followed by mechanical grinding is required. Preparation of the substrate

19 RPM/Belgium N.V. - Version 2 - 04.06.2007 - MONILE GB Application  Mechanical grinding is always required to remove the laitance or to obtain a rough surface for a good adhesion.  After the mechanical treatment, humidifying of the substrate is necessary before applying the adhesion layer.

20 RPM/Belgium N.V. - Version 2 - 04.06.2007 - MONILE GB Application  Adhesion layer: mix Monile ® Liquid (ca. 3.5 litres) with 1 bag of composite (21 kg) until a homogeneous mixture is obtained. The mixing can be done with a normal handmixer, type Festo or Beba.  Monile ® mortar:  put 2 x 25 kg of Quartz 1/4 Arzano and 16.5 kg of Quartz 0/1 Arzano in the mixer and add ± 6.5 - 7 litres of Monile ® Liquid.  Add 2 x 21 kg Monile Composite (2 bags) and mix till it is homogeneous.  The quantity of the Monile ® Liquid can differ depending on the humidity of the quartz.  The use of a Zyclos mixer is recommended to avoid lumps. Mixing of the Monile ® components

21 RPM/Belgium N.V. - Version 2 - 04.06.2007 - MONILE GB Application  The mixing is ready when it looks dry and can be pressed together between the fingers to a compact mass. When being compressed, the mixture should not stick to the fingers. If the mixture is too dry, add Monile ® Liquid.

22 RPM/Belgium N.V. - Version 2 - 04.06.2007 - MONILE GB Application  Apply the mixture on the wet concrete with a hard brush.  Brush lines must stay visible and must not flow together. If brush lines flow together, add some composite to make a drier mixture. Application of the adhesion layer

23 RPM/Belgium N.V. - Version 2 - 04.06.2007 - MONILE GB Application NOTE: The concrete must be wet, but there should be no standing water on the floor! NOTE: The concrete must be wet, but there should be no standing water on the floor!

24 RPM/Belgium N.V. - Version 2 - 04.06.2007 - MONILE GB Application  Place on the floor 2 guides of 13 mm thickness. The distance between the two guides should be ± 2 meter.  Pour the ready mixture from the wheel barrel into the uncured adhesion layer. Application of the Monile ® flooring

25 RPM/Belgium N.V. - Version 2 - 04.06.2007 - MONILE GB Application  Distribute the Monile ® mixture.  Smooth the mixture with a ruler, as is done with ordinary concrete.

26 RPM/Belgium N.V. - Version 2 - 04.06.2007 - MONILE GB Application  Finish the surface with a powerfloat. Before the treatment, sprinkle some liquid on the surface. This will improve the effect of the powerfloat.  The powerfloat will take the fine aggregates up to the top layer and will close the surface.  In corners where the powerfloat can not be used, use a hand vibrator to obtain the same result.

27 RPM/Belgium N.V. - Version 2 - 04.06.2007 - MONILE GB Application NOTE: If the temperature is too high during the application or if there is a draught, cover the Monile ® with Durabran ® W in order to control moisture content during curing! NOTE: If the temperature is too high during the application or if there is a draught, cover the Monile ® with Durabran ® W in order to control moisture content during curing!

28 RPM/Belgium N.V. - Version 2 - 04.06.2007 - MONILE GB Application  The substrate must be of a porous material: concrete, brick work or similar.  First wet the surface and apply the adhesion layer.  For vertical works, the thickness can be decreased to 5-6 mm as there are no mechanical forces of any importance on the vertical parts. Application of the Monile ® skirtings

29 RPM/Belgium N.V. - Version 2 - 04.06.2007 - MONILE GB  White spots are a typical effect for cement based systems. They occur when the temperature during application and curing is lower than 12°C. This phenomenon is called “EFFLORESCENCE”. Explanation: Cement + H 2 OCa(OH) 2 (cured cement) Ca(OH) 2 + CO 2 CaCO 3 (white salt)  During the reaction of cement with water, Ca(OH) 2 is formed. During this process, H 2 O is transported to the surface. Efflorescence / white spots

30 RPM/Belgium N.V. - Version 2 - 04.06.2007 - MONILE GB Efflorescence / white spots  The water is also taking Ca(OH) 2 to the surface. At the surface, the water is evaporating and Ca(OH) 2 stays at the surface where it can react with the CO 2 out of the air to CaCO 3 under certain temperature situations. When the temperature is low, the evaporation of H 2 O is a long process and more Ca(OH) 2 shall be transported to the surface.  If CaCO 3 is formed at the surface, the Monile ® floor has white spots on the surface which are visible in dry conditions. If the floor is wet, they are not visible.  Normally they disappear after a few months of intensive use. Chemically, the floor can be etched with an acid to transfer the insoluble CaCO 3 into the soluble salt that can be washed away.

31 RPM/Belgium N.V. - Version 2 - 04.06.2007 - MONILE GB Efflorescence / white spots  We recommend the following acids:  3% - 3.5% HCI acid solution ± 3 min. contact time afterwards flush with a lot of clean water  10% lactic or citric acid solution ±10 min. contact time afterwards flush with a lot of clean water  See addendum : efflorescence in the Monile Flooring
