Sections 1.1 to 1.3

 Concepts before computation ◦ Build concepts and understanding ◦ Use computation as reinforcement  The Three Step Processs ◦ Explore with examples and hands-on activities ◦ Develop concepts with  Narrative and visuals  Concept Developing Questions and Exercises ◦ Application  Lab Work  Critical Thinking  Problem Solving 2

 Scientists have learned that the Earth and behavior of things on Earth follow certain rules: ◦ How the Earth and other things move. ◦ Why the Earth is round. ◦ How light behaves:  Why the sky is blue.  Why the oceans are blue.  Why sunsets are red.  Why the sun and moon appear so large when they are on the horizon 3

 As with many things, knowledge and understanding of the rules and how things interacts increases our appreciation of and how we view the world. ◦ Examples:  Chefs and food  Musicians and music  Meteorologists and weather  Etc. 4

 Scientists question the behavior of nature.  The answers to these questions become science. ◦ Life Sciences  Biology  Zoology  Botany ◦ Physical Sciences  Geology  Astronomy  Chemistry  Physics 5

 Gives us knowledge of the basic things like: ◦ Motion Forces ◦ Energy ◦ Matter ◦ Heat ◦ Sound ◦ Light ◦ Composition of Atoms 6

 Ties all other sciences together  Discusses: ◦ Formation of Molecules ◦ Combination of Molecules to form Matter 7

 Involves how everything else works together to make matter that is alive.  How organisms: ◦ Move ◦ Think ◦ Get Energy ◦ Use Energy ◦ Reproduce ◦ Etc. 8

 Physics – Basic ◦ Supports Chemistry  Chemistry – Central ◦ The Glue That Ties Things Together ◦ Supports Biology  Biology – The Most Complex 9

 Remember – NOT our focus!!!!  Used to: ◦ Support ◦ Reinforce ◦ By Application 10

 We want to teach you understanding and how to think FIRST!  We want your to understand not just give rote recitation.  Reinforce the understanding and concepts with activities that require application. 11

 Started in the 17 th Century using: ◦ Analysis ◦ Models ◦ Mathematical Desriptions 12

 Describes relationships clearly without the ambiguity of words.  E=mc 2  No double meanings in math  Makes ideas easier to verify or disprove by experimentation 13

 Credited to the Physicist Galileo Galilei and the Philosopher Francis Bacon  Lived in the late 16 th and early 17 th centuries.  A method that allows us to: ◦ Gain Knowledge ◦ Organize Knowledge ◦ Apply New Knowlege 14

1. Identify a problem 2. Make a hypothesis (an educated guess) 3. Predict the results (outcome) 4. Test the predictions through experimentation 5. Revise the hypothesis if necessary and retest 6. Formulate simple, general rules which summarize: a.The final hypothesis b.The final prediction(s) c.The final outcome(s) 15

 Not the Universal Key  Still use: ◦ Trial and Error ◦ Experimentation without Hypothesizing ◦ Accidental Discoveries SCIENCE RESULTS FROM THE ATTITIDUE OF SCIENTISTS 16
