2  Recognition for SEAS students who have done exceptional work to prepare for, execute, and learn from a sustainable community development project  Projects: apply engineering skills to an expressed community need; local or abroad  Created by Prof. Dana Elzey, students  Under the SEAS Office of International Programs

3  Both research and service to a community  Two weeks minimum of residence on site  In the case of multiple trips, one visit must last one week or more  Approved by Prof. Elzey on basis of intellectual rigor and sustainability

4 1. Cultural/ linguistic/ historical Context (Before fieldwork)  Offer insight into the context of the community  Include history, language, anthropology, sociology, and more 2. Ethics and practice of community engagement (Before fieldwork)  Cover some dimension of community engagement  Examples: STS 2500: Cross Cultural Engineering STS 2500: Ethics, Protocols, and Practice of International Research ENGR 2595: Developing Community-Based Projects 3. Project synthesis and reflection (After fieldwork)  Guides through writing and reflection  Examples: Independent Study GDS 3559: Project Synthesis

5  Students will prepare a paper that reports on their research and reflects on their experience  Present paper to UVA community  Write an executive summary and send to community partner

6  All SEAS students are eligible  Upperclassmen can talk to Prof. Elzey about qualifying, too  Contact Professor Dana Elzey for more information and for project approval  dme2j@virginia.edu dme2j@virginia.edu
