3 ETE 335 Elementary Social Studies Lesson deBono’s Thinking Hats Goals: Students will learn facts about the 50 United States. They will also learn the geographical layout of the United States Objectives: Content/Knowledge: Students will be able to locate states on a map. Students will be able to list the capitals to each state. Process/Skills: Students will be able to research information about different states. Students will be able to create a report about different states. Values/Dispositions: Students will be able to form opinions about other states and how they connect to their lives.

4 ETE 335 Elementary Social Studies Lesson deBono’s Thinking Hats Rationale: History has shaped the make up of the United States. This lesson will help teach the geography of the US and how each state is important to this nation. Standards: State – Illinois Common Core or Learning Standards 17.A.1a Identify physical characteristics of places, both local and global e.g., locations, roads, regions, bodies of water). 17.A.2b Use maps and other geographic representations and instruments to gather information about people, places and environments. National – NCSS Themes CULTURE TIME, CONTINUITY, AND CHANGE PEOPLE, PLACES, AND ENVIRONMENTS

5 Objective

6 Students will learn about each region of states. Starting with the Northeast/Mid-Atlantic region, Great Lakes, Southeast, West Central, Southwest and Pacific regions. They will see what states are located in which region. What is the biggest state in the US? What state has the largest population? Where are famous monuments are located? (ie. 7 Intuitive

8 Students will be broken up into 6 different groups and each group will be assigned a different region. The groups will find important information regarding that region such as demographics of the region, what the region is know for growing and the population count of the region. This information will be presented to the class so the students can learn a little about each region. Resources: Computers, Text book, and poster boards. Intuitive

9 Positive/Strengths

10 Positive/Strengths Students will get back into the groups they were in previously and research the benefits of living in one of the regions or specifically choose a state to research the benefits of. (For example living in the West Central Region is good for farming.) Students will present this information to the class using a poster board of PowerPoint. Resources: Computer, poster boards, textbook.

11 Negatives/Weaknesses

12 Students will research the negatives of living in one of the regions or specifically choose a state to research the benefits of. For example Living in the state of California one negative is all the pollution because of the high population. The students will use the same poster board or PowerPoint to present this information as they did the positives of each region/state. Resources: Computer, poster boards, textbook. 13 Creative

14 Creative Students will learn a song that will teach them all of the states. They will also learn another song that will teach them the capitals. These songs will get the students to learn the states and capitals as well as help them memorize them by learning a song. 15 Thinking About Thinking

16 Student will be given an individual state and will do research about that state. They will give background information, demographic information, state bird, song, flag, capital and famous people from that state. This will be in a power point format and will just be turned in to the teacher. This will sum up the whole lesson with a small project to turn in on their own state. Resources: Computer, textbook.

I will assess the students on their group work as well as individual work. They will also assess each other with group evaluations. They will also be quizzed on the 50 states and capitals.
