3 Captain Cordanza. “Glow” Rasheed Ollie Charlie

4 ACT I

5 The Fire Alert Sounds. Engine 37 responds and rushes to the scene of the fire.

6 There is a fire in a three story building and the fire is in the third floor.

7 1. It helps pressurize the water from the hydrant to fight the FIRE. 2. It carries hundreds of gallons of extra water to add to the water from the hydrant. At the fire, The Engine Pump is needed because:

8 What is the correct setting in psi for the engine pump pressure? psi stands for: Pounds per square inch

9 The Engine Pump Pressure Formula Back pressure Nozzle pressure Friction loss of total attack line + Friction loss of total supply line Engine pump pressure (psi)

10 We each calculated our own part of the formula, to get the required Engine Pump Pressure: + Friction loss of total supply line 4 Back pressure 12 Nozzle pressure 50 Friction loss of total attack line 15

11 ACT II

12 While investigating the fire, Rasheed’s air tank alarm went off.

13 A young boy that was unconscious Then, Rasheed discovered…

14 The Burning Question: Stairs? Fire Escape? Ladder? Any of these might be blocked by fire. What was the fastest and safest escape plan?

15 In Act II, we used: Formulas, Firefighting Information, and The Pythagorean Theorem, c 2 = a 2 + b 2 which is used for right triangles.

16 c 2 = a 2 + b 2 a c b

17 Firefighter B calculated the total distance Rasheed must travel, using stairs to get out. c 2 = a 2 + b 2

18 Firefighter C calculated the total distance Rasheed must travel, using the ladder to escape. c 2 = a 2 + b 2

19 Firefighter D calculated the total distance Rasheed must travel, using fire escape to get out. c 2 = a 2 + b 2

20 Firefighter A worked with information about How Fast Do Firefighters Breathe and Move, under Conditions, and calculated the minutes Rasheed would need to rescue the victim by the shortest route. (Rasheed had only minutes left on his air tank.) 12 minutes

21 As a group, we found that Rasheed had enough time for all three routes. We decided against the ladder for safety reasons, and we chose the shorter of the two remaining escape routes:

22 Math we used to Answer the Questions: Formulas Basic Algebra and Order of Operations Firefighting measurements and rates. Triangles and the Pythagorean Theorem

23 Which escape route: fire escape Did the victim survive?Yes! The boy survived What was the reason for fire? They needed to investigate more but, the fire captain said “The wire shorted and heated up inside the wall and caused smoke which lead to fire. Smoke got to the boy before he even knew it. Act III
