3 With the California Gold Rush of 1849, population exploded in the region.

4 Settlers from the mining towns built their homes with timber from the Pacific Northwest

5 In order to save parts of the West as natural wilderness, Congress created several national parks and forests.

6 The large number of visitors to Yosemite National Park causes traffic jams and air pollution.

7 Westerners are trying to find responsible ways to balance the needs of the environment, the community and the economy.

9 The area around San Jose, California, is called Silicon Valley, because there are so many computer companies there.
