Background WHO recommends a minimum of four antenatal visits based on a review of the effectiveness of different models of antenatal care. WHO guidelines are specific on the content of antenatal care visits, which should include: - blood pressure measurement - urine testing for bacteriuria & proteinuria - blood testing to detect syphilis & severe anemia - weight/height measurement (optional)

International Goals & Targets Special emphasis must be placed on prenatal and postnatal care and care for newborns, particularly for those living in areas without access to services

Definition of Indicator Percentage of women aged 15-49 years attended at least once during pregnancy by skilled health personnel (doctors, nurses, midwives or auxiliary midwives) Numerator: Number of women aged 15-49 years attended at least once during pregnancy by skilled health personnel (doctors, nurses, midwives, or auxiliary midwives) in the 2 years prior to the survey Denominator: Number of women aged 15-49 years surveyed with a birth in the 2 years prior to the survey

Methodological Issues MICS includes a set of questions to measure the specific care received during the antenatal visit including: – blood pressure measurement – blood testing – urine testing – weight/height measurement
