2 History At-A-Glance O SNPhA was founded in 1972 on the campus of Florida A&M University. O Students from Florida A&M University united with students from Howard University, Texas Southern University, and Xavier University to form a student organization that would promote service to minority populations within their communities. O Since 1972, SNPhA has grown from 4 schools to 91 pharmacy schools to date. http://snpha.org/about

3 “Serving the Underserved” O SNPhA is an educational service association of pharmacy students who are concerned about pharmacy and healthcare related issues, and the poor minority representation in pharmacy and other health-related professions. O PURPOSE: plan, organize, coordinate and execute programs geared toward the improvement for the health, educational, and social environment of the community

4 Objectives O To offer student members the opportunity to develop leadership and professional skills O To educate students about and promote active participation in national health care issues O To develop the role of the minority health professional as a vital member of the health care team O To develop within communities a positive image of minority health professionals O To educate communities on better health practices and to increase their awareness and understanding of diseases

6 National Pharmaceutical Association O The National Pharmaceutical Association (NPhA) is dedicated to representing the views and ideas of minority pharmacists on critical issues affecting health care and pharmacy; as well as advancing the standards of pharmaceutical care among all practitioners.

12 National Initiatives

13 Project Diabetes O SNPhA is in strong support of Diabetes as one of our clinical initiatives. O Diabetes currently effects 23.6 million adults and children in the United States. Roughly 25% of these patients are unaware of their condition. In addition to these staggering statistics Medicare has shown that at least 1 out of every 4 adults (~ 57 million people) are living with pre-diabetes. O SNPhA has accepted the challenge to educate patients on disease state management, lifestyle modifications, medication therapy, and monitoring related to Diabetes.

14 How could YOU be a part of the SNPhA Diabetes Initiative?  Be a part of the national subcommittee for the Walmart/Sam’s Club Diabetes Health Fair!  Connect with your local schools for this year’s youth diabetes campaign!

15 Remember the Ribbon O National HIV/AIDS Initiative aimed at towards promoting awareness, education, and prevention of HIV/AIDS within minority populations.

16 How could YOU be a part of the SNPhA Remember the Ribbon Initiative?  Locally you may volunteer in the community and raise awareness about HIV/AIDS!  On a national level, advocate for greater HIV support from the federal government or join SNPhA’s National Remember the Ribbon Subcommittee!

17 Operation Immunization O This program is an immunization awareness campaign designed to increase the public’s knowledge about immunizations, while increasing the number of adults who receive immunizations. O Chapters will be awarded points based on outreach events promoting awareness.

18 How could YOU be a part of the SNPhA Operation Immunization Initiative?  Work with our United Nations partner Shot@Life to advocate for legislation and vaccine initiatives in developing nations!  Participate in local community outreach events to promote vaccinations!

19 Power to End Stroke O SNPhA has partnered with the American Stroke Association (ASA) on the Power to End Stroke/Smoking Cessation initiative. O Chapters will be awarded points based on outreach events promoting awareness.

20 How could YOU be a part of the SNPhA PTES Initiative?  Be a part of the national heart walk hosted by the American Heart Association –create a team and spread the word about stroke!  Create an interprofessional team to host a blood drive together!

21 Chronic Kidney Disease O SNPhA and Abbott Renal Care are collaborating on a new initiative to increase awareness on the risk factors and disease states that can lead to chronic kidney disease (CKD). O Chapters are awarded points based on patient screenings, distribution of health information, and awareness during National Kidney Disease.

22 How could YOU be a part of the SNPhA CKD Initiative?  Join the National CKD sub- committee to share ideas and become instrumental in the implementation of new projects and events!  Become involved at the local level by participating in walks and webinars sponsored by our national affiliates!

23 Legislative and Membership Benefits O This is a dual initiative focusing voting registration among underrepresented minorities and on immigration issues affecting the nation. O Chapters will be awarded points for any events such as voting registration drives and citizenship drives or information distribution events.

24 How could YOU be a part of the SNPhA Legislative Initiative?  Write to local legislators about the importance of provider status for pharmacists!  Help your chapter delegate with the resolution submission process for Regional meetings!

25 Bridging The Gap O Bridging the Gap is an initiative designed to foster a relationships between the members of SNPhA and NPhA in order to develop well polished and exceptional pharmacists through the guidance and tutelage of NPhA members.

26 How could YOU be a part of Bridging the Gap?  Participate in the SNPhA – NPhA mentorship program!  The program will allow you to connect with someone who will help guide you towards becoming an outstanding pharmacist!
