There are many exceptions to the rules for construct nouns that you studied in lesson 16. Most of these exceptions are too infrequent to establish a type. A few exceptions appear with enough frequency to require our attention. Some singular monosyllabic nouns such as אָב and אָח add a suffixed hireq yod. For example: AbsoluteConstruct אָב father אֲבִי father of אָח brother אֲחִי brother of Nouns such as בַּיִת and מָוֶת contract in the construct form. For example: AbsoluteConstruct house בַּיִתבֵּית house of death מָוֶתמוׂת death of

In the construct form, בֵּן is usually joined to the absolute noun with a maqqēp and the tsere reduces to a segol. For example: AbsoluteConstruct son בֵּןבֶּן־ son of Nouns with the vowel pattern of qamets-tsere will change to the vowel pattern of segol-segol in the construct form. For example: AbsoluteConstruct thigh יָרֶךְיֶרֶךְ thigh of shoulder כָּתֵףכֶּתֶף shoulder of

Nouns that end in ֶה change to ֵה. For example: AbsoluteConstruct field שָֹדֶהשְׂדֵה field of

Feminine Singular Nouns in the Construct Form Feminine nouns generally follow the general rules you have already learned for construct nouns. Additionally, feminine nouns take an ַת ending. For example: AbsoluteConstruct year שָׁנָהשְׁנַת year of queen מַלְכָּהמַלְכַּת queen of prayer תְּפִלָּהתְּפִלַּת prayer of

Feminine nouns have two common exceptions: Generally, three-syllable nouns that begin with a closed syllable have penultimate stress in the construct form. For example: AbsoluteConstruct battle מִלְחָמָהמִלְחֶמֶת battle of The reduction of tsere or qamets to a shewa does not occur in some words. This is not a consistent pattern but should be recognized when it occurs. AbsoluteConstruct blessing בְּרֵכָהבְּרֵכַת blessing of

Feminine nouns that end in ָה, ַת, ֶת, ִית, or וּת do not always change when in the construct form. If they do change, the changes follow the general rules you have already learned for construct nouns. One irregular exception is אִשָּׁה, which becomes אֵשֶׁת.
