Anticipatory Set Think about the last thing you wrote. Why did you write it? Why did Dr. Suess write The Cat in the Hat?? Why did the author of the encyclopedia write that? Think, THEN tell your neighbor

Author’s Purpose I can determine the author’s main purpose (e.g. to describe, to explain, to persuade, to inform, and to entertain) for writing the expository text. Created by: Maggie Howe, Sycamore

Essential Questions What is the author’s purpose? How can you use clues from the text to determine the purpose? Objective: I can determine the author’s main purpose (to inform, to decribe, to explain, to entertain, to persuade) for writing the expository text

Last year, you learned PIE. But this year, seeing that we are so much more knowledgeable than last we are, of course, taking it up a notch! get ready.... for..... De Pie!! As in, “Hey you! Gimme a slice of de pie!” The Standards changed from express to describe, so I came up with a new acronym

Authors write for a reason. This reason may be to: Describe Explain Persuade Inform Entertain De Pie!!!

Authors Describe things to readers by: Painting them a picture. *Hint Sometimes the word “Express” is used instead of describe

Ask yourself: “Self- After reading this do I have a clear picture in my mind of the setting or characters?? If yes.... the author’s purpose was to describe (or express)

Example : Describe The ocean water glitters for as far as the eye can see. The soft crash of waves and smell of salt water have a calming affect. Paradise Beach is a quiet place where you can watch wildlife and relax.

Authors Explain things to readers by: Telling them How- To do something.

Example of Explain Making a peanut butter and jelly sandwich is really easy. First, gather your ingredients (bread, peanut butter, jelly) and two knives. Spread the peanut butter on one slice of bread with one knife, and your jelly on the other piece of bread with the other knife. Put the bread together and enjoy!

Authors Persuade readers by: Trying to change their opinions.

Persuade Example Art class should be longer than all other specials. There never seems to be enough time to get our pictures done. If we had more time in art class everyone would do a better job on their pictures and we would learn more. Art is very important and we should have the time we need to finish a project.

Authors Inform readers by: giving them facts about a topic.

Inform Example A volcano is a mountain that opens downward to a pool of molten rock below the surface of the earth. When pressure builds up, eruptions occur. Gases and rock shoot up through the opening and spill over or fill the air with lava fragments. Eruptions can cause lateral blasts, lava flows, hot ash flows, mudslides, avalanches, falling ash and floods.

The kids just loved volcanos so much, I figured I’d throw in a couple awesome pictures amidst the reading.

Authors Entertain readers by: Tellin g Storie s.

Entertain Example Once upon a time there was a little boy who loved to play soccer. He would run as fast as he could to the ball, but every time he got there and tried to kick it he would miss. He started to think he wasn't very good at soccer, but he didn't give up. His hard work paid off and one day he scored the winning goal for his team.

Discuss the following fill-ins with your group... Recorder: write the answer on a slate!

One day a beautiful princess was walking down the street hoping to find her prince. She looked high and low and finally gave up. On her way home she found a lonely little frog. She picked him up and began to talk to him telling him all her problems. When she was done she said good-bye to the frog and gave him a kiss on top of his head. Before her very eyes appeared the man of her dreams and they lived happily ever after. Entertain

The old house smelled musty and decayed as I went inside. It obviously hadn’t been cared for in quite a while. The wallpaper was faded and peeling. Even though it was a beautiful sunny day outside, it was hard to see inside the house because of all the dirt that covered the windows. Describe

Every child should play a sport. When you are on a team you learn to get along with everyone and work together for a common goal. Team work is the best lesson anyone can learn. This is why I believe every child should be on a team. Persuade

Laura Elizabeth Ingalls Wilder was born on February 7, 1867 in Pepin, Wisconsin to Charles and Caroline Ingalls. She met and married Almanzo James Wilder in 1885.
