10 Refresher Project initially started Summer 2008 – Joint project entitled “The Helical Axis of Motion of the Human Knee” Collaborative effort between the Naval Medical Center in Portsmouth (NMCP) and Old Dominion University. – Focus of the Research Evaluate several surgical techniques for repairing the anterior and posterior cruciate ligaments. Evaluate the effectiveness of total knee arthroplasty.

11 Background Statistics – According to Darin Padra, Ph.D of UNC, there are an estimated 95,000 new anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries each year – Of those that undergo a surgical procedure, only about 75 percent can return to their previous activity levels – Of these 95,000 cases, 45,000 are high school athletes

12 Problem Definition Much debate exists among orthopedic surgeons about the proper treatment of a PCL injury. In order to compare different techniques with intact knee motion, tests will be preformed on the intact knee and then either the ACL or PCL will be cut and then repaired. Data obtained will lead to a better understanding of how the knee functions

13 Plan of Work NMCP + ODU – The goal of the joint biomechanics knee project is to design an apparatus that will test cadaveric knee joints in order to better understand the kinematics of the human knee motion. ODU – To design an apparatus that suits the requirements requested by Dr. DeMaio.
