3 General Guidelines… Be responsible… No horseplay Follow directions

4 General Guidelines… Perform only the experiments you are given permission to do. Don’t touch anything until you are told to by the teacher. Never eat or drink in the lab.

5 General Guidelines… Never work alone. Never leave an experiment unmonitored.

6 Lab Courtesy Keep your work area clean Clean and put away all equipment Backpacks need to be off the floor

7 Lab Courtesy Have your pre lab activities done Monitor your experiment at all times

8 Chemicals Keep your hands away from your eyes and mouth. If you get chemicals on your skin or in your eyes, rinse with water for at least 20 minutes.

9 Chemicals Never take chemicals away from the lab area. Dispose of unused chemicals into the proper container.

10 Chemicals Do not touch, taste or smell any chemical. If you are putting chemicals into new containers---label, label, label!!!

11 Equipment If glassware breaks, do not pick it up…let the teacher know! Make sure your hands are dry before unplugging electrical equipment.

12 Equipment If you do not know how to properly use a piece of equipment—ask!! Make sure your glassware is clean.

13 Equipment Do not rinse or wash hot glassware with water. Make sure the electrical cords are not frayed or loose.

14 Using Heat Point the openings of test tubes towards the wall when they are being heated. If there is a fire drill, make sure all heat sources are turned off and all containers are closed.

15 Using Heat Don’t look into containers being heated or touch them with your bare hands!!! Do not heat substances unless directed to do so. Never leave a heat source unattended.

16 Clothing Contact lenses should not be worn when chemicals are used. Goggles, aprons and gloves should be worn when necessary.

17 Clothing Long hair must be tied back and dangling jewelry and clothes secured. Shoes must cover all of your foot. Never apply makeup in a laboratory!!

18 Remember: If there is an accident or unsafe condition, report it to the teacher IMMEDIATELY!!!!!!

26 Lab Safety Cartoon( Taped page 5) Pick 1 of the lab safety rules and draw a cartoon showing a student correctly following the rule and a student not following the rule. Include a caption explaining the cartoon below the cartoon. 3 colors On the back of the cartoon, Pick 1 of the lab safety symbols and draw a cartoon showing a student correctly following the symbol and a student not following the symbol.

27 Practice Lab Safety Quiz! 1.It’s okay to work alone in lab if you have a cell phone with you. 2.Goggles need to be on anytime you are using heat, glassware or chemicals. 3.Use your hands to pick up broken glass so it can be thrown away as quickly as possible. 4.Take your backpack to the lab station with you because you never know what you might need. 5.If you spill a chemical on your skin, rinse it under running water for at least 5 minutes.
