2 What do we mean by the term “youth culture” ?
Discussion with students on the term Youth Culture – what does it mean, what examples can they give?

3 Understanding “Youth”:
The terms youth, adolescent, teenager, kid, and young person are often interchanged. Youth can refer to the entire time of life when one is young, including childhood. It often refers specifically to the time of life that is neither childhood nor adulthood but somewhere in between. Discussion with students on the term youth what does it mean, what examples can they give?

4 Youth Culture definitions:
“the sum of the ways of living of adolescents; it refers to the body of norms, values, and practices recognised and shared by members of the adolescent society as appropriate guides to actions” “cultural elements that prevail in a given society at a given time” Discussion with students on the term Youth Culture – what does it mean, what examples can they give?

5 “young adults (a generational unit) considered as a cultural class or subculture”
Generations All generations have been affected by and will affect youth culture. Discussion with students on the term generation – what does it mean, what examples can they give?

6 Recognised Generations: GI Generation Silent Generation Baby Boomers Generation X Generation Y Generation Z Have they heard of these terms? What do they mean? Get students to write these names on pieces of paper – no more than three per A4. Identify any prior knowledge they have of these social groups.

7 GI Generation Born Current Age Life when they were young?
Physical Activities when they were a youth/teenager etc Who was advantaged/disadvantaged? Get students to write these names on pieces of paper – no more than three per A4. Identify any prior knowledge they have of these social groups.

8 Silent Generation Born Current Age Life when they were young?
Physical Activities when they were a youth/teenager etc Who was advantaged/disadvantaged? Get students to write these names on pieces of paper – no more than three per A4. Identify any prior knowledge they have of these social groups.

9 Baby Boomers Born Current Age Life when they were young?
Physical Activities when they were a youth/teenager etc Who was advantaged/disadvantaged? Get students to write these names on pieces of paper – no more than three per A4. Identify any prior knowledge they have of these social groups.

10 Generation X Born Current Age Life when they were young?

11 Generation Y Born Current Age Life when they were young?

12 Generation Z Born Current Age Life when they were young?

13 Generation Movie Use the movie to provide students with more information on who and what the generations are

What are the major influencing factors on your generation? How does this affect your participation in physical activity? Who is advantaged/disadvantaged by this? Why?
