6 Pilgrim Fathers 1620 101 English men, women and children arrived in Plymouth, Massachusetts Strong ideas about religion – they didn´t agree with the Church of England Ship Mayflower They thought that all men were equal and so they didn´t have slaves They were ill and hungry, Indians helped them, corn Thanksgiving Day, on the 4th Thursday of November

9 The Civil War Differences between the North and the South 600,000 people died South – slaves North – slaves were not allowed 1860 – Abraham Lincoln, president North won the war 1865 – Lincoln was shot at the theatre

10 The Wild West Cowboys – not so romantic job like in films 1869 – railway line from the East met the line from the West in Utah 2 million Native Americans in the 15th century The Europeans brought diseases which killed Indians, they fought and killed Indians too 1900 – less than 250,000 Native Americans 1890 – indian wars ended with the Battle of Wounden Knee, many Sioux people died, reservations

11 Great Depression 1929 – the stock market crash Time of prosperity changed into a time of hardship Americans were frustrated 1932 – a new president, Franklin Roosevelt, came up with a plan called the New Deal to improve the situation 1939 – American economy started to boom

12 The Second World War 1941 – Japanese bombed the US naval base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii 1945 – Harry Truman, the new president, had to decide if an atomic bomb should be used against Japan Japan surrendered 1939 – Albert Einstein wrote a letter to Roosevelt about an atomic bomb danger in Germany, Oppenheimer, a leader of the project, started with experiments 2 bombs – Fat Man, Little Boy

13 Black Americans About 10 % of the Americans – black A lot of prejudice against black people Ku Klux Klan – went out to beat and murder black people Until 1954 – had to go to separate schools, problems in buses, restaurants Martin Luther King 1964 - Nobel Peace Prize 1968 - murdered in Memphis
