12 In Shakespeare’s time, spelling was not formalized, so Shakespeare’s name was spelled: Shakspear Shagspere Shaxper Shaksper

13 Shakespeare probably went to school until he was between 13 and 15 years old. He would have learned Latin, English and math.

14 Shakespeare married Anne Hathaway in 1582. He was 18. She was 26.

15 Six months after they were married, William and Anne had a daughter named Susanna. In 1585 twins Judith and Hamnet were born. Hamnet died at age 11.

16 Shakespeare arrived in London around 1595 and worked as an actor. After he began writing plays, they were performed at The Globe Theater.

17 Wrote 37 plays, 154 sonnets, and started out as an actor He wrote comedies, histories, and tragedies R & J was written about 1595 (Tragedy)

18 Elizabethan Theaters The Globe was a standard Elizabethan Theater (built in 1599) Was built by Lord Chamberlain’s Acting Company (Shakespeare worked for them) Theater troupes were almost like gangs. At the time, actors and people associated with the theater were of very low status. Theater was meant to be popular entertainment for the masses. Elizabethan theater is named for…

22 Views of the Interior People near the stage would be called ‘groundlings.’ Fancy people would sit in the seats.

23 The Stage Space for musicians before the show The ‘Above’- this is where angels and good spirits would appear The main stage- this is where most of the action takes place. The ‘Below’- bad spirits and devils would emerge from trap doors in the stage
