Aged men are also told to be “temperate.” All of us are encouraged to live “soberly.” Titus 2:12 teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present age,

8 Where Is Self-Control Needed
Building Christian Character Self-Control Where Is Self-Control Needed In respect to habits or conduct. “Habits are first cobwebs, then cables.” We must show self control over habits. If we don’t let a bad habit start, then it won’t become a problem later. Example: Kudzu, though a small vine, can choke the life out of a giant tree.

9 Where Is Self-Control Needed
Building Christian Character Self-Control Where Is Self-Control Needed In respect to habits or conduct. Example of Daniel. Daniel 1:8 But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king's delicacies, nor with the wine which he drank; therefore he requested of the chief of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself.

10 Where Is Self-Control Needed
Building Christian Character Self-Control Where Is Self-Control Needed In respect to habits or conduct. Example of Daniel. Example of Joseph.

11 Genesis 39:7-12 And it came to pass after these things that his master’s wife cast longing eyes on Joseph, and she said, “Lie with me.” 8 But he refused and said to his master’s wife, “Look, my master does not know what is with me in the house, and he has committed all that he has to my hand. 9 There is no one greater in this house than I, nor has he kept back anything from me but you, because you are his wife. How then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?” 10 So it was, as she spoke to Joseph day by day, that he did not heed her, to lie with her or to be with her. (con’t.)

12 Genesis 39:7-12 (con’t.) 11 But it happened about this time, when Joseph went into the house to do his work, and none of the men of the house was inside, 12 that she caught him by his garment, saying, “Lie with me.” But he left his garment in her hand, and fled and ran outside. NKJV

13 Where Is Self-Control Needed
Building Christian Character Self-Control Where Is Self-Control Needed In respect to habits or conduct. Example of Daniel. Example of Joseph. Example of Jesus. 1 Peter 2:23 who, when He was reviled, did not revile in return; when He suffered, He did not threaten, but committed Himself to Him who judges righteously; NKJV

14 Where Is Self-Control Needed
Building Christian Character Self-Control Where Is Self-Control Needed In respect to habits or conduct. Self-Control is needed with respect to our language. “The words we speak are an x-ray of the soul. They provide information about what we are like on the inside.”

15 James 3:3-10 Indeed, we put bits in horses’ mouths that they may obey us, and we turn their whole body. 4 Look also at ships: although they are so large and are driven by fierce winds, they are turned by a very small rudder wherever the pilot desires. 5 Even so the tongue is a little member and boasts great things. See how great a forest a little fire kindles! 6 And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity. The tongue is so set among our members that it defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire by hell. 7 For every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and creature of the sea, is tamed and has been tamed by mankind. (con’t.)

16 James 3:3-10 (con’t. ) 8 But no man can tame the tongue
James 3:3-10 (con’t.) 8 But no man can tame the tongue. It is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. 9 With it we bless our God and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the similitude of God. 10 Out of the same mouth proceed blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be so. NKJV James 1:26 If anyone among you thinks he is religious, and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his own heart, this one's religion is useless.

17 Where Is Self-Control Needed
Building Christian Character Self-Control Where Is Self-Control Needed In respect to habits or conduct. Self-Control is needed with respect to our language. Self-Control is needed in how we talk. Ephesians 4:29 Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers.

18 Where Is Self-Control Needed
Building Christian Character Self-Control Where Is Self-Control Needed In respect to habits or conduct. Self-Control is needed with respect to our language. Self-Control is needed in how we talk. Psalm 39:1 To the Chief Musician. To Jeduthun. A Psalm of David. I said, “I will guard my ways, Lest I sin with my tongue; I will restrain my mouth with a muzzle, While the wicked are before me.”

19 Where Is Self-Control Needed
Building Christian Character Self-Control Where Is Self-Control Needed In respect to habits or conduct. Self-Control is needed with respect to our language. Self-Control is needed in how we talk. Self-Control is needed with respect to tattling or gossip. “Gossip is the most deadly microbe. It has neither legs nor wings. It is comprised entirely of tales, and most of them have stings.”

20 1 Timothy 5:13 And besides they learn to be idle, wandering about from house to house, and not only idle but also gossips and busybodies, saying things which they ought not. 2 Thessalonians 3:11 For we hear that there are some who walk among you in a disorderly manner, not working at all, but are busybodies. 1 Peter 4:15 But let none of you suffer as a murderer, a thief, an evildoer, or as a busybody in other people's matters.

21 Where Is Self-Control Needed
Building Christian Character Self-Control Where Is Self-Control Needed Self-Control is needed with respect to covetousness.

22 Ephesians 5:3 But fornication and all uncleanness or covetousness, let it not even be named among you, as is fitting for saints; NKJV Ephesians 5:5 For this you know, that no fornicator, unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God.

23 Where Is Self-Control Needed
Building Christian Character Self-Control Where Is Self-Control Needed Self-Control is needed with respect to covetousness. Covetousness is strictly forbidden. Romans 13:9 For the commandments, "You shall not commit adultery," "You shall not murder," "You shall not steal," "You shall not bear false witness," "You shall not covet," and if there is any other commandment, are all summed up in this saying, namely, "You shall love your neighbor as yourself."

24 Where Is Self-Control Needed
Building Christian Character Self-Control Where Is Self-Control Needed Self-Control is needed with respect to covetousness. Covetousness is strictly forbidden. A desire for wealth can lead to ruin.

25 1 Timothy 6:9-12 But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and harmful lusts which drown men in destruction and perdition. 10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows. 11 But you, O man of God, flee these things and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, gentleness. 12 Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, to which you were also called and have confessed the good confession in the presence of many witnesses. NKJV

26 Where Is Self-Control Needed

27 Where Is Self-Control Needed
Building Christian Character Self-Control Where Is Self-Control Needed Self-Control is needed with respect to covetousness. Self-control is needed with respect to fleshly desires. Romans13:14 But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to fulfill its lusts. 1 Peter 2:11 Beloved, I beg you as sojourners and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts which war against the soul,

28 Where Is Self-Control Needed
Building Christian Character Self-Control Where Is Self-Control Needed Self-Control is needed with respect to covetousness. Self-control is needed with respect to fleshly desires. 1 John 2:16 For all that is in the world--the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life--is not of the Father but is of the world. 1 Corinthians 9:27 But I discipline my body and bring it into subjection, lest, when I have preached to others, I myself should become disqualified.

29 Where Is Self-Control Needed
Building Christian Character Self-Control Where Is Self-Control Needed Self-Control is needed with respect to covetousness. Self-control is needed with respect to fleshly desires. Self-control is needed with respect to anger. 2 Kings 5:12 Are not Abana and Pharpar, rivers of Damascus, better than all the waters of Israel? may I not wash in them, and be clean? So he turned and went away in a rage.

30 Proverbs 16:32 He who is slow to anger is better than the mighty, And he who rules his spirit than he who takes a city. Ephesians 4:26 Be angry, and do not sin: do not let the sun go down on your wrath, James 1:19-20 So then, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath; for the wrath of man does not produce the righteousness of God.

31 Where Is Self-Control Needed
Building Christian Character Self-Control Where Is Self-Control Needed Self-Control is needed with respect to covetousness. Self-control is needed with respect to fleshly desires. Self-control is needed with respect to anger. Self-control is needed so we will not be revengeful.

Romans 12:17-19 Repay no one evil for evil. Have regard for good things in the sight of all men. 18 If it is possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men. 19 Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place to wrath; for it is written, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” says the Lord. NKJV 1 Thessalonians 5:15 See that no one renders evil for evil to anyone, but always pursue what is good both for yourselves and for all.
