2 Introduction of the technology DEFINITION & PRINCIPLE “A technique which enables three-dimensional Images to be made” Using a laser, interference, diffraction, light intensity recording and suitable illumination of the recording, the image changes as the position and orientation of the viewing system changes in exactly the same way as if the object were still present, thus making the image appear three-dimensional. Describe how it is used in the future society. FUNCTION & DESIGN Design: so far, cameras (more  better resolution) make snapshots that are stitched together by a software. Then by using fast-pulsed lasers project holographic pixels on a special photo refractive polymer FUTURE USES Function: Game  Realize the new concept of game in which users can interact with 3D hologram image Military  Help a military research with 3D images of arms Exhibition  Exhibit culture assets located in different regions at one exhibition room through 3D real-time image Video conference  Improve the limits of existing teleconference Communicate with 3D real-time images of others in remote region.  Feel like talking with a real person Advertising Concerts and performing art Theme park

4 Q2: What are the obstacles for those technologies to be adopted? How can you overcome and diffuse those technologies if you're the CEO of the company that created those technologies? Technological advancement to remove ○ the screen & to use it in every-day life is ○ greatly needed Current technology is ineptitude in internet ○ speed, processing units ○ screen/reflecting medium Lack of technological advancement Obstacles High Cost Holography Conflicts with telecom companies The equipment for holographic images is rather complex and expensive Technological advancement needs a great deal of research and financial investment Data overload that deteriorate the quality of network Telecom companies do not want to pay network development cost

7 Q3: What are the consequences of those technologies in terms of benefits and harmful effects to society? The electronic waste created of old technology recycling process Decrease of personal interaction (face-to-face meetings, …) The interactivity (more like real life, eye-contact) Reduction of physical space (because there is no need for a monitor or walls) The drawbacks The benefits

8 Q4: What are the institutional mechanisms (e.g. laws, government regulations, norms, culture, etc.) that are necessary for those technologies to be available to society? Government support Standardization of technology Regulation to prohibit immoral Uses of hologram technologies As of now, standardization of technology is absent. Standardization makes producers produce the hologram products in a standardized way, which achieves economies of scale and drops the price. Hologram technology can be used in immoral uses such as commercialization of sex and improper military purposes May need laws or regulations to prevent this. R&D Needs a specialized organization to do research in this area. Need Professionals who can fully understand holograms and can help to further develop them. Hologram technology is a complex and highly sophisticated that needs a great deal of research and financial investment Financial investment & incentives or government support on R&D

9 Q5: If you're the person who use those technologies everyday, how would you feel about using those technologies? Will those technologies be something that you enjoy using, or hate using? Why? I would be able to feel closer to whoever I am communicating with. Being able to see a person in 3D is a lot more realistic. It would feel a bit awkward because everyone around me would be able to see the hologram as well. Lack of privacy. Feel good that I can see the entire structure of the object. Provides more information. FEEL ENJOY. HATE would enjoy being able to see the entirety of an object whenever I want to. I don’t have to meet the person or object in person to see what it looks like as a whole. More intimate connection with the object. Can view the object in real life size. Isn’t very mobile. Can’t view while walking. May need a secluded area or space. Location matters a lot. Lighting, space, people around me.

10 Q6: Do you think those technologies will be adopted in the future? If so, when and how? If not, why not?  When? It will not be possible to make a portable holographic display like they showed in Star Wars.  Why? 1. Create, capture, and restore holographic images. 2. Holographic image processesor. 3. Holographic image display/recorder. 1. (will always need a physical screen / reflector) Multiple, miniature cameras (Possible) Able to take multiple pictures of the object at high speeds. Higher and faster powered CPUs (Possible) Able to process the pictures from the cameras in real time.
