Part 1 Elements

Key concepts: Describe a pure substance. What are some characteristics of elements? List examples of characteristics of elements. How do we use these characteristics to classify elements? What is the difference between an atom and an element?

Key Vocabulary: Element Particle Pure substance Metal Non-metal Metalloid

Imagine a world of legos:

Element: An element is a pure substance that cannot be broken down into a simpler substance by physical or chemical means. All elements are PURE! – Means…a substance that is made of one type of particle – ON Periodic Table: shown as only having 1 capital letter: O for oxygen; C for carbon; Ca for calcium – This particle is called an ___________ ATOM! What does pure mean? What are some examples of chemical and physical changes? What is an atom? Where have we seen this before?

SAY WHAT! What do you already know about atoms and elements??? – Write on the post-it note on your desk. List 3 things that you already know. – What do you know?

Review time! Draw this please!

Element: When we say PURE… – ANYWHERE else that you see that element, it will be EXACTLY the same Same properties Same number of electrons, protons, and neutrons How does an element differ from other pure substances (like compounds)? What if the element is found in space? What are some properties of elements?

Pure vs. Unpure:

Properties of Elements: We can identify elements by its properties: – Each has its own special characteristics NOTE: these properties DO NOT depend on the amount – Include: Physical properties – Density Chemical properties Reactivity—what’s this? What are some characteristics that make you..you? What are some properties? --boiling point --able to burn --state of matter

Properties: Compare the properties of iron with those of cobalt and nickel. How do you think cobalt and nickel are used to make products?

Color Hardness Texture Flammability What else? Properties used to distinguish elements: Reactivity to acids, water, etc. Density Conductivity Malleability Ductile Luster State of matter Boiling points

Classifying Elements: How could we classify this class? – What does classify mean? ? – Volunteers? – What properties make us different? Similar? What are some characteristics that make you..you? What does classify mean?

Classifying Elements 2: Elements are grouped into categories by their similar properties: -What are some characteristics that make you..you? -What does classify mean? Refer to page 237! -Which are good conductors? Elements Metals Shiny, conduct heat and electricity; malleable and ductile Metalloids Have properties of both metals and non- metals Non-Metals Don’t conduct electricity or heat; not shiny

On page 237:

Review: What is an element? What does it mean to be pure? How are elements different from other materials? How are elements classified?

Periodic Table:

Pearls of Wisdom: A substance in which all of the particles are alike is a pure substance. An element is a pure substance that cannot be broken down into anything simpler by physical or chemical means. Each element has a unique set of physical and chemical properties. Elements are classified as metals, nonmetals, or metalloids, based on their properties.

Homework: Vocabulary cards for the following term: – ELEMENT Questions on page 237: Write the ? – Do this on the back of your notes: – # 4, 5, 6, and 7 Vocabulary cards for the following term: – ELEMENT Questions on page 237: Write the ? – Do this on the back of your notes: – # 4, 5, 6, and 7
