The Effects of White Light Filtered Through Colored Water on Glow-in- The-Dark Stars. Denzil, Daniel, Stacey, Mayra

QUESTION What color water filtering white light causes the glow-in-the-dark stars to emit the greatest amount of light?

HYPOTHESIS If we shine white light through different colored water on the glow-in-the -dark stars the blue water will cause the stars to emit the most light, because it has the lowest wavelength frequency.

INDEPENDENT VARIABLE The color of the water filtering the light

DEPENDENT VARIABLE Th emission of light from the stars(Lux)

CONSTANTS The size of the stars The distance of the water from the star (14 cm) The temperature of the air (24°C) The temperature of the water (76 °C) The time the light is shine on the star (1 minute) The volume of water in the tank (4 L) Amount of colorant in the water on the tank through which the light will shine (1 tablet)

PROCEDURE 1.Line the inside of the box with white parer. Set the box upside down on a white sheet of paper. Mark where the box and the tank will go, so the tank will always be the same distance from the light bulb.

PROCEDURE 2.Cut a circular hole in the side of the box the size of the light bulb socket. Tape the socket in place so the light bulb can be screwed in on the inside of the box and the plug be on the outside.

PROCEDURE(contd.) 3.Find the height of the light bulb from the floor of the box (the table it’s on). Also, measure the distance from the sides of the box. Create a hole opposite the light source so the probe can be thrust into the box to be pointed directly at the star, as close as possible. (See diagram) Build a flab to cover the probe hole when the probe will not be inserted into the box.

PROCEDURE (contd.) 4.Set up the Vernier probe with the computer.

SETTING probe star tank dark box light bulb

PROCEDURE (cont’d.) 5Fill water tank with 4 Liters of water. 6.Repeat steps 5 – 9. 7.Repeat step 6. Place ___ mL of blue- colored water into the tank. 8.Repeat steps 7 – 9. 9.Repeat steps 13 – 14 for each different color of water.

DATA

RESULTS

Our results supported our hypothesis. Blue colored water filtering white light caused the stars to emmit the highest luminiscence. In contrast, green light caused the stars to emmit the least luminiscence. CONCLUSION
