Why are there time zones??? Caused by the r&r boom Back then, towns kept their own time Sun directly over town = noon – How is this a problem state to state? 1883, all railway clocks set to a new standard to make travel more consistent & easier The country caught on!

Railroads Spur Industry At first, railroads (R&R) were locally run Domestic lines couldn’t join because of differences in gauges Gauges: width of a railroad track

Improvements to railroads 1886: railroads in the south adopt northern gauges – (13,000 miles of track change) Railroads now create a network network: system of connected lines – Shipping: freight cars become universal shipper pays only 1 fare for whole trip
