1 Influential Persons in Sustainability By: iJacsn Jason, Asia, Christy, Stephanie, Nicole

2 Chief Seattle  A chief to the Duwamish people  famous for having made a speech that was generally in favor of being responsible to the environment and to have respect of the land rights of his people  It includes such inspiring lines as: 'Man did not weave the web of life; he is merely a strand in it. Whatever he does to the web, he does to himself.

4 Theodore Roosevelt  Big Game Hunting brought him to the west In September of 1883.  By the time he got there the large herd was gone by hunters and disease.  Spent some time there and witnessed virtual destruction of big game species.  As a result conservation became one of Roosevelt’s main concerns.

5 Theodore Roosevelt Con…  When he became president in 1901 :  Created US forest services  Established 51 federal bird reservations  4 national parks  Proclaimed 18 national monuments ( 1906 American Antiquities Act)  Protected 230,000,000 acres of public land

7 Grifford Pinchot  Born in 1865  An American Forester  Politician-> 28th governor of Pennsylvania  The first chief of the United States Forest Service  Progressive Party

8 Grifford Pinchot Con….  is known for changing the treatment of forests in the United States  And for advocating the conservation of the nation's reserves by planned use & renewal.  He called it “the art of producing from the forest whatever it can yield for the service of man.”  In 1896, the National Academy of Sciences formed the National Forest Commission.

9 Rachel Carson  An American marine biologist  Conservationist  Author-> “Silent Spring”  full-time nature writer in the 1950s  Aquatic biologist in the U.S. Bureau of Fisheries

10 Rachel Carson  Her book led to a nationwide ban on DDT and other pesticides, and it inspired a grassroots environmental movement that led to the creation of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
