2 Task Process Evaluation Conclusion 19 th Century United States Immigration Welcome to Ellis Island: This is the island where many European immigrants landed in the 19 th Century as they moved from Europe to the United States. Today you will take a journey with these immigrants. Click on “Task” to move on. Click Here for

3 Task Process Evaluation Conclusion After exploring factors that lead Irish immigrants to move from their home country of Ireland to the United States, you will write the story of Patrick or Maggie (you may use another name if you so choose). Your story should incorporate a history you write for one of these fictional characters. Apply the information you learn from your quest to create your story. Make sure you list at least two factors that drove Irish immigrants to leave Ireland and two factors that pulled them to the United States. You should also incorporate how you think the story of 19 th Century immigrants relates to American today. Task

I hope you have enjoyed learning about the lifestyle of Irish immigrants both before and after they came to the U.S. I hope you can also recall at least two factors that pushed them to leave Ireland and two factors that pulled them to the U.S. Though you have learned a great deal about Irish immigrants, there were many immigrants to the U.S. in the 19 th Century that we did not have time to discuss. When you are finished with your essay, click on the Home button to take you back to the homepage where you can click on the sailing ship to learn more!

7 While we will learn primarily about Irish Immigrants to the U.S., immigrants from other countries (especially Germany) came to the U.S. in the 19 th Century. Europe is to the East of the United States and it is important for you to understand the geographic location of these countries. Click on the map of Ireland in order to play a game that will test your geographic knowledge of Europe. You and your partner should work together to complete the puzzle. 10 The Industrial Revolution The booming industrial revolution in America provided job opportunities for many 19 th Century immigrants that may not have been available in the countries from which they came. Click on the front of the train to learn more about the work conditions that welcomed immigrants to the U.S. Make sure you take time to explore the website as it provides an opportunity for you to learn what it was like to work in a factory. 4

11 You have learned primarily about 19 th Century Irish immigrants to the U. S. but there are immigrants that come to the U. S. from other countries every day. These people come to the U.S. for many different reasons. Click on the picture to read an interview with Fang-Yi Sheu, a dancer that moved from the Taiwan to the U. S.. Take time and explore the website to hear the stories of other modern U.S. immigrants. Do people still come to the U.S. to live today? 5
