Climate Dynamics Seminar Class I: An Overview By De-Zheng Sun http://www.cdc.noaa.gov/people/dezheng.sun/

Outline of Today’s Lecture The climate system A fundamental question about the climate system The approach of this course Some examples of variability in the state of the climate system Recommended reading for the next lecture

The Hydrosphere

The Cryosphere Land Ice Sea Ice

The Lithosphere

The Biosphere

The Interactions

The question A fundamental question about the climate system is why its state is always changing, and yet has so far avoided a runaway instability that could destroy all life. It is also against this background that the importance of understanding human impact on the state of the climate system better emerges. With our industrial activity changing the chemical composition of the atmosphere, are we prodding a "lamb" who poses no harm, or a "beast" who may react to devour all of us?

Topical Maximum SST--An Example of Stability

The Approach This course attempts to shed some light on the above questions through lectures by leading climate experts in the Boulder climate community.

A Poem By Robert Frost Some say the world will end in fire, Some say in ice. From what I've tasted of desire I hold with those who favor fire. But if it had to perish twice, I think I know enough of hate To say that for destruction ice Is also great And would suffice.
