DAU initiative in cooperation with EUNITE WORKSHOP intelligent planning: advancements in the environmental domain Politecnico di Bari, September 2004

What is EUNITE? European Network of Excellence on Intelligent Technologies for Smart Adaptive Systems (Fifth RTD Framework Programme) EUNITE aims to join forces of Intelligent Technologies for exploiting the potential of their synergies towards building Smart Adaptive Systems and promote their practical implementations.

EUNITE is intended to encourage the joint exploitation of intelligent systems techniques and activities that intent to build Smart Adaptive Systems in industry by: Promoting the dialogue between the separate research communities of Intelligent Technologies Shorten the lead time from scientific innovation to actual applications in industry or economy via technology transfer actions Encourage new enterprises coming into this area with success stories and best practice information Strengthen European training activities and collaboration

The workshop The WS aims at increasing the convergence of different research fields towards common scientific efforts exploring the border line between the domains of Intelligent Planning (industrial, business and robotics oriented) and Environmental Engineering (environmental control and monitoring, air/water/soil quality management, environmental planning).

The WS will encourage theoretical and practical reflections mainly considering that intelligent planning in environmental domains requires different adaptation abilities covering all the four adaptivity forms described by Sagasti (1970): External adaptation, adaptive behaviour in the presence of a stimulus originating from its environment; Internal adaptation, adaptive behaviour in the presence of a disturbance located in the object of the system; Darwinian adaptation, adaptive behaviour when the response is directed towards modifying its object; Singerian adaptation, adaptive behaviour when the response is directed towards modifying its environment.

Operatively, the WS will focus on two main research areas: 1. the planning problem – reframing intelligent planning models from the toy blocks world to the real world; 2. multi agent systems (MAS) – requirements for adaptation abilities. These two areas will be explored referring to two main issues typical of environmental domains: a. management of scarce environmental resources; b. future scenarios building.

Adaptation in Multiagent Systems Planning: from toy blocks world to real world Scarce environmental resources management Future Environmental Scenarios building WS track B1 WS track A1 WS track B2 WS track A2 A dialogue framework will be provided to the speakers who will be invited to reflect on specific problems posed by the crossing of the above specified themes according to the following scheme:

The WS, in the final phase, will be addressed to develop a road map of future development opportunities both for scientific research and technological applications. A second main goal of the WS is the publication of a book.
