What are they doing? Two short video clips KPRC (2 min 15 sec) http://www.click2houston.com/video/19411171/in dex.html http://www.click2houston.com/video/19411171/in dex.html HCC (2 min 25 sec) http://tc1.hccs.edu/hist/yr08/iphone/Mlearning_H CC.ram http://tc1.hccs.edu/hist/yr08/iphone/Mlearning_H CC.ram (Local option)

9/16/2015 5 Chancellor’s Innovation Grant -- why we were funded Broadband access to internet through portable devices has become commonplace Smart mobile phones are relatively inexpensive, fast becoming a ubiquitous presence in our students’ daily lives Majority of our students take their phones with them wherever they go Instead of viewing mobile devices as a disruptive presence, educators today should seek to exploit their potential.

9/16/2015 6 Chancellor’s Innovation Grant Explore the viability of new teaching and learning environment – Smart mobile phone access to instructional materials, via ip and also using pre-loaded content Note: -- before this grant has expired we have gone already far beyond the original exploration --

The Study Make mobile devices available to students Via self reporting, also via comparative studies, examine the potential for mobile learning at HCC Connecting time Collaborating Time In Depth Understanding Retention Academic Performance Learn what is effective and what is not

Our Original Intentions Pilot run, single class (Anatomy and Physiology) Anecdotal data Comparative Instruction, two classes, same teacher Statistical data Involvement of more teachers, more classes Microbiology, Nutrition Positioning for growth enterprise wide

9/16/2015 9 Project Implementation Stage one: formatting instructional materials to mobile phone Stage two: apply the technology to A&P class Stage three: comparative study Stage four: extend to other biology classes

9/16/2015 10 Anecdotal: Students connecting time increased 20% students’ study time has doubled 40% students’ study time increased at least 30% 40% students’ study time increased at least 50-70% The above results are from students’ survey

9/16/2015 11 Anecdotal: Student’s collaborating time increased Students formed study groups from day one 100% of the students believe iPhone has increased their connection both socially and academically 100% attendance for the mini-term

9/16/2015 12 Anecdotal: In-depth Understanding of Concepts 95% of students believed phone has helped them to understand the class material better 100% of them believe they can repeatedly access the concepts, including video and audio device, and in fact do 20% of them think the camera option in the phone helps them with Lab exams

9/16/2015 13 Comparative Studies Spring, 2009 Comparison study of Experimental class and Control class Course content related time spending on Email, text messages, and course review Involvement of more teachers, more classes

9/16/2015 14 Experimental Group Email Text message Textbook and paper class notes 1) PC vs iPhone 2) PC, iPhone, vs Textbook and Paper class notes Results: http://tc1.hccs.edu/hist/yr08/iphone/hcc_mlearning_pilot.htm Dr. Lifang Tien, Lifang.tien@hccs.eduLifang.tien@hccs.edu

What it took to get to this point: And where we are headed 9/16/201516

Technical Issues Server storage iPhone friendly Web delivery Platform Transfer of content materials to iPhone friendly Web Delivery Platform Reformatting and conversion of Media Creation of new media Creation of Conferencing room facilities, blog forums, password protection schemes, etc Instructor training 9/16/201517

Anticipating the involvement of others Till middle of Spring Materials and HTML platform only for one course, nothing preloaded to devices, still 100% wireless mode Needed updates to the interim delivery platform to reflect wider involvement, i.e. more classes in more disciplines and more instructors -See next 6 screens in blue- 9/16/201518

Beyond Summer 2009 --Growth/ Expansion issues Permanent server home Permanent delivery platform Small screen friendly: “Portal” Expanded Instructor training Use of iPhone/ iPod Touch, other devices Instructional use of iPhone/ iPod Touch, other devices How to operate the web delivery platform Friendly already to 121 different mobile phones and counting! How to create media Instructional design issues Integration with the larger HCC vision for delivery of instruction 9/16/201527

Beyond Summer 2009 --Growth/ Expansion issues (continued) Finish the grant, secure additional funding Train faculty - in progress for Summer/ Fall start Complete the small screen friendly platform Approve the Enterprise wide “Portal” Imaging and branding Enterprise wide roll out Networking, dissemination & publishing 9/16/201528
