3 Data Drives the Team As an Academy Coordinator, You will need to utilize data (almost daily) in decision making.

4 One of Your Roles as an Academy Leader is to Find Your Team’s Data Person If it’s NOT you… think about finding the skills in your team’s: Math Teacher Science Teacher Special Education Teacher Physical Education Teachers (people who deal with data and figures as part of their daily activities)

5 What Types of Data are we Talking About? Attendance Climate Test Scores Passing Promotion

6 What Should We Think About Before Collecting and Using Data? Purpose Why Intended Audience Who will get the data? How will they get the data? How is the data to be used? Accuracy Official vs. Unofficial

7 What Are We Looking For When We Analyze Our Data? Trends over Time Similarities Differences Expected/Unexpected Outcomes

8 ATTENDANCE Collected: Daily Weekly Monthly Quarterly Data disaggregated by: Advisory/ Homeroom Team Academy Grade Level

9 ATTENDANCE Don’t Forget About: Accuracy – Clean the Roll Sheets (Make it someone’begin on day one – ask the kids about missing students) Lateness Communicated / Displayed : Everyone must talk about Attendance Charts (in each homeroom / team/ academy space) Numerically by homeroom/advisory in daily bulletin or attendance bulletin School-wide on daily announcements

11 ATTENDANCE: A Final Word Set goals as a TEAM, involving all adults and students Everyone is an attendance monitor Revisit your goals often and celebrate SUCCESS!

12 CLIMATE What Can We Measure? # of Suspensions # of Arrests # of Detentions # of Discipline Referrals Teacher Attendance Informal / Formal Climate Surveys # of Fires / Serious Incidents # and type of Referrals to “Alternative Educational Opportunities”

13 CLIMATE Looking for trends by: –Year –Month –Day –Time of Day –Male / Female –Time of Year –Location

14 TEST SCORES Pre and Post Testing –TDHS Courses (built –in) Shows growth in each class/ by student Can be used by teachers for improving or continuing their “Best Practices” –Data can be used to re-evaluate placement on the team Standardized Test Scores –Sometimes comparing Apples to Oranges –Data can be used to identify strengths and weaknesses of students on the team – useful in creating strategies for IMPROVEMENT

15 Passing Rates / Promotion Don’t Forget About the Interim Report Gather Data on Passing rates by class and by course –Data will reveal any “trouble spots” Usually a particular course that everyone is having difficulty with or perhaps a course being taught by a sub… As a TEAM – check and re-check report card data for accuracy –Keep your own copies –Keep track of credits

16 Where do I get the DATA? What Poly can provide: List of absent students by academy School wide attendance printed weekly by district Suspensions by month (student name, type of suspension, and # of days)

17 Where do I get the DATA? What TDHS and Coaches can provide: Pre and Post test scores for 9 th and 10 th Grade English and Math Climate survey results for the whole school

18 Where do I get the DATA? What your Academy Team needs to collect: Daily/Weekly attendance from pink bubble sheets or form __’s Lateness from bubble sheets or form __’s Course passing rates from report cards or teacher’s grade sheets
