14 First Steps in Applying 1.WHAT TYPE OF GRANT IS FOR YOU? STUDY/RESEARCH (or ARTS) or ENGLISH TEACHING ASSISTANTSHIP (ETA) Decide which type of grant you would like to apply for (you can only apply for one grant in a given cycle) 2.WHAT COUNTRY? What’s your passion? Caution: Some, but not all grants, require foreign language ability. 3. NEW! COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

15 Getting Started 1.Make an initial appointment to see Fulbright Program Advisor Karen Wachsmuth to discuss possibilities 2.Pick 2-3 countries and read about their particular requirements on the Fulbright website, taking careful notes 3. Read the entire Application section on the website (print it out if possible) 4. Plan your application strategy for the next 4 months using the UI Fulbright Timeline on the IP website (handouts at the registration table: different for Research/Study applicants and ETA applicants)

16 Reaching the Final Goal SUBMITTING YOUR COMPLETE APPLICATION AT THE UI **Preliminary Submission Appointment (highly recommended): All applicants are encouraged to schedule a preliminary submission appointment with Karen during the week of Sept. 3-6 to check application components and formatting. It is also strongly recommended that you ask your references to submit them online by Sept. 6 th.

17 Reaching the Final Goal SUBMITTING YOUR COMPLETE APPLICATION AT THE UI UI CAMPUS DEADLINE: Friday, September 13, 4:30 p.m. Applicants submit 1) a hard copy of ALL application materials (including references, etc.) to Karen Wachsmuth in International Programs and 2) submit their applications electronically (each student must make an appointment during the previous week to do so)—NO EXCEPTIONS
