William Fulbright Created by Congress in 1946 to foster mutual understanding between the U.S. and other cultures and nations Sponsored by the U.S. Department of State Functions abroad in cooperation with Fulbright Commissions and Foundations, and U.S. embassies Over 1,600 grants awarded yearly, representing all elements of American society

Award to support self-designed study or research, or language teaching assistantships abroad in over 155 countries If you receive a grant, you will be doing exactly what you want to do in a specific country You will be representing your country, while enhancing your personal and academic credentials You will be learning about a new culture and its people

Highly-motivated, open-minded individuals with strong academic and/or professional preparation Those who can contribute to and benefit from cultural exchange and that has an interest in community involvement Current juniors, graduating seniors, alumni. Less than six months spent in host country (excluding undergraduate study abroad) Demonstrated leadership ability

8 U.S. Student Program www.fulbrightonline.org/uswww.cmu.edu/fso/fulbright Grant Information: Full and ETA Full Grants Individually-designed academic, research, or artistic project Projects may include university coursework, research, or professional training in the arts Sample Carnegie Mellon Projects: Netherlands, Music, 2011-12 Project title: Harpsichord and Historical Performance Study in the Netherlands Australia, Chemistry, 2011-12 Project Title: Evaluation of Magnetic Virus Capsids as MRI Contrast Agents English Teaching Assistantships (ETA) Grantees assigned to teach conversational English in schools or universities throughout host country Grantee-designed project emphasizing community engagement For 2012-13, over 50 countries offer Fulbright ETA grants Sample Carnegie Mellon Post: Indonesia, 2011-2012 Teaching English to high school students

9 U.S. Student Program www.fulbrightonline.org/uswww.cmu.edu/fso/fulbright Statement of Proposed Research or Study (Full Grants) Two page essay that answers the questions: what, where, how, when, and why Demonstrates knowledge of the field of study Demonstrates awareness of needs in host country Any potential concern about project feasibility or your ability should be addressed directly

10 U.S. Student Program www.fulbrightonline.org/uswww.cmu.edu/fso/fulbright Letters of Affiliation (Full Grant only) From a host contact willing to advise/mentor you while conducting your Fulbright project Can be a professional at a university, laboratory, library, community organization Local Organization Preferred over large International Organizations ( UN, Red Cross etc) Provides a signed letter on institutional letterhead indicating their support Check country summary for specifics before requesting letter

11 U.S. Student Program www.fulbrightonline.org/uswww.cmu.edu/fso/fulbright Statement of Proposed Research or Study (ETA Grant) One page essay that explains how you will reach your goals as an English Teaching Assistant, and why you would like to be an English Teaching Assistant Description of a small, supplemental research project (focused on community involvement) –Should not be location-specific Demonstrates sincere desire to teach English to non-native speakers
