Health and Safety Your health, safety and welfare are important to the College. If you have any concerns or worries and would like to talk, speak to your tutor or Student Services. You will receive appropriate training related to your course and must conform to the health and safety procedures explained to you.

Safeguarding The Adult College has a responsibility to safeguard the health, safety and welfare of all learners. If for ANY reason you or another learner feel unsafe, threatened or under pressure to do something that makes you uncomfortable, speak to Student Services. The College may need to talk to other agencies about your disclosure.

Safeguarding The Prevent Duty What you need to know as a learner at the Adult College.

Safeguarding What is Prevent? Prevent is the Government’s strategy to stop people becoming involved in violent and non-violent extremism, and supporting terrorism. The Counter-Terrorism Act of 2015 places a responsibility on colleges and schools to prevent people being drawn into terrorism. This includes “extremism” and “radicalisation”.

Safeguarding What is extremism? Extremism is vocal or active opposition to Fundamental British Values (we will look at these in a minute); It also includes calls for the death of members of the British Armed Forces.

Safeguarding What are Fundamental British Values? These are: Democracy; Rule of Law; Individual Liberty; Mutual respect and tolerance for those with different faiths and beliefs; Not discriminating against people because of their age, disability, gender, marital status, pregnancy, race, religion or belief, sexual orientation or transference.

Safeguarding What is radicalisation? Radicalisation is when a person or group of people adopt and promote increasingly extreme political, social or religious beliefs that go against the current law; or reject expressions of freedom of choice. Radicalisation is when people support terrorism and, in some cases, join terrorist groups.

Safeguarding How can we stop extremism and radicalisation? Radicalisation and extremism can only be stopped if we: Protect vulnerable people and include them in society in more supportive ways; Help young people to find jobs; Better integrate immigrant populations into the local culture.

Safeguarding So what does all this mean for Adult College Learners? The College expects you to adhere to our Learner Conduct & Performance Policy. Talk to your tutor about any questions or concerns you have about Prevent – all Adult College staff are trained in the Prevent Duty; All Adult College staff will actively promote Fundamental British values and include topics in your lessons to discuss and promote these values; The College has a duty to safeguard its learners whilst they are at the College; we have a zero tolerance policy on extremism, radicalisation, discrimination, violence, inequality, and racism. It is important to be vigilant but not to over-react. If you have any concerns over anyone who you think is showing signs of extremist or radical behaviour, talk to your tutor or the Safeguarding and Prevent Officer, Yvonne Bennett, immediately.

Safeguarding Some topics which your tutor will include on your course to promote Prevent and Fundamental British Values ( tutor to add list here)
