3 Unit Background: Digging Into The Past Video Clip of Earth’s Continents (remember last year?) What did we learn about Earth last year? What knowledge do we need to have coming into this unit?

4 Unit Background: Digging Into The Past What does “Digging into the Past” mean to you? How do we know what Earth was like millions of years ago? How do we predict the future? How is this unit different from stuff we have already talked about?

6 Pre-Reading: “The Search Begins” Tomorrow we will begin “Digging Into The Past” by reading about a topic central to our unit. Before reading, read the words pulled from the text. With your group, organize the 20 words into different groups. Give each category a title. You may make as many categories as your groups thinks are needed.

7 The Search Begins Tuesday April 24 th, 2012 Warm-up: 1. List what words from yesterday you did not know how to group. 2. List the category titles you created. Homework: - Extra Credit Project - Gradesheet Signed - DIP HW #1 (orange) Objective: Students will be able to analyze fossil evidence in order to describe how Calvert Cliffs changed over time.

9 Classwork 1. Read the Calvert Cliffs Reading. 2. Re-read and highlight important information about the formation of Calvert Cliffs. 3. Paragraph 3 describes how this area looked 10-20 million years ago. Visualize this image and draw a picture on your paper. You will have 13 minutes to complete 1-3

Order the number of events from 1- 4 that occurred to form Calvert Cliffs. _____ The seas began to retreat as the climate changed. _____ Sediments such as sand and rock were deposited in layers on the sea floor. _____ Faulting and folding of the Earth’s crust help to expose the sea floor. _____10 to 20 million years ago, Maryland was covered with a warm, shallow, sea.

11 Where is Calvert Cliffs? Calvert Cliffs is located on the on the Eastern Shore of Maryland in Calvert County.

12 What is Calvert Cliffs? Of all the natural resources in the state of Maryland, perhaps none is more famous than the 30 miles of cliffs that dominate the shoreline of the Chesapeake Bay in Calvert County.

13 Were the cliffs always there? The cliffs that now stand 100 feet above the water line were once the bottom of the sea floor.

14 Class Discussion If the cliffs were once on the bottom of the sea floor.. What might the person in the raft observe in the cliffs as he glides along the water?

15 Digging a little deeper… For over 150 years, fossils dislodged from the cliffs have been studied by scientists at facilities such as the Smithsonian Institution.

16 Let’s see what they have found… In all, fossils of over 600 species of organisms have been identified from Calvert Cliffs. Check out some of these…

22 THE WHALE FOSSIL OF CALVERT CLIFFS! The whale skull fossil found at Calvert Cliffs was similar in shape and structure to the one shown here. The skull is a fossil of a baleen whale. Baleen whales lack teeth. Instead, they have grooves that are used to trap food. Feeding baleen whales swim with their mouths open, taking in vast mouthfuls of water.

23 THE WHALE FOSSIL OF CALVERT CLIFFS, Cont.! Today, baleen whales are the largest animals on Earth, yet they feed on the smallest organisms such as shrimp and plankton. 24 EXIT TICKET How do the fossils found in Calvert Cliffs provide evidence that the climate and living things in the area have changed over time? --You may draw a 3 frame cartoon with dialogue that answers the question. -- Or you may write a paragraph describing the process of the cliff’s formation and the fossils that give evidence of that formation.

25 Extension For Homework (DUE TOMORROW!): Describe how fossils from 10-20 millions of years ago are found washed up on the shore of Calvert Cliffs. What role do erosion and weathering play in this process? (refer back to the reading!)
