Decent Army Leadership Joan Ferguson EMD 350V M70 Hooah!

Introduction My vision is about what is needed to have a strong leadership in the US Army as we had previously like in the times of Eisenhower and Patton. I have laid out the characteristics that I believe are essential for a strong leader in our Army today.  Some of these qualities consist of discipline, good communication skills, accountability, and the warrior ethos. I plan to implement my vision when I first reach my unit as a 2Lt

My Vision In addition to being a strong leader and taking these qualities into consideration, the warrior ethos must be implemented

Warrior Ethos and Army Values

The Problem Today, there is a serious lack of leadership in our Armed Forces. Rarely names of generals are known.  In my opinion, there is no such name today that stands out like General George Patton or General Dwight Eisenhower. Our soldiers also have a lack of discipline. In the Army statistics of domestic abuse and suicide are at an all time high after the return of a deployment. Lack of Accountability among lower scale leaders. This has led to the disconnection between soldiers and discipline. We also have a lack of knowledge of other cultures. Many soldiers go to the Middle East and do not understand the difference between Jihadists and Islamists.

Objectives Build a closer relationship from soldier to soldier, whether it be a bond between a Private and a Colonel. (Warrior Ethos: I will never leave a fallen comrade [personal or military life]) Leaders be culturally adapt.  Could include learning a new language or taking classes on different cultures. Enforce discipline, which should not be limited to military life. (Honoring the Army Values) A leader must be accountable for everything.  “A leader’s word is his/her bond.” –SFC Perry (Retired) EVERY soldier must keep focused on the task in front of him/her. This includes from quartermaster to infantry man. (Warrior Ethos: I will always place the mission first)

Vision and Impact Functioning successfully as a Unit, which means more as a team than a forced view (Loyalty; Army Values, The Soldier’s Creed) Better view of US Armed Forces Professional and better prepared leaders (which could range from a E-4 to O-10) Culturally adapted soldiers More respect towards the Warrior Ethos and Army Values. Better overall quality of a Soldier Pride of Selfless Service

Summary Better quality of leadership  Soldiers deserve the best quality of leaders. Better preparing the Army Leadership/Unit for the 21 st Century, culturally-diverse world Soldier morale boosted
