Tools and Resources for Software Defined Networks Martin Swany Indiana Center for Network Translational Research and Education (InCNTRE)

The Great Wave Software Defined Networking / OpenFlow Bringing IT and CS together –but not just another thing those wacky CS folks want… Benefits: –Convergence – parallel networks are not cost- effective –Control – future research aside, the benefits of SDN are compelling today (NaaS)

InCNTRE Training InCNTRE conducts OpenFlow training Previous: –May - CICnet & Brocade –June - HP –July - Joint Techs –Aug - Merit & IU –Nov - Dante Upcoming: –Jan 13th - APAN –Jan 17 th - Joint Techs (room for more, register here: https://indianauniv- web.ungerboeck.com/reg/reg_p1_form.aspx?oc=10&ct=GE NERAL&eventid=5414) https://indianauniv- web.ungerboeck.com/reg/reg_p1_form.aspx?oc=10&ct=GE NERAL&eventid=5414 –Feb 4th - NANOG –March - NorduNET and SURFnet

InCNTRE Test Lab SDN Interoperability Testing Consortium –InCNTRE is the first ONF-authorized lab to provide conformance testing services (as of Sept. 2012) Members contribute SDN products –Shared Resources include Ixia and Spirent Testing Equipment InCNTRE staff develop, execute & document interoperability test plans for SDN –Results shared with members participating in a given test Members can use lab time for ONF conformance pre-tests

InCNTRE: PlugFest Hosting Host for Open Networking Foundation PlugFest Networking industry event to verify interoperability of OpenFlow implementations Hosted at InCNTRE Lab at IUPUI 2012 Event Held in October –19 networking vendors –60+ engineers –6 racks of networking equipment –5 full days of testing

InCNTRE: Testing Proof-of-Concept Testing –For organizations interested in proof-of-concept testing, we will work to build a custom testbed and test plans –Our testers have experience with most commercial and open-source OpenFlow implementations. Performance Testing –We are actively working with the ONF to define performance metrics for SDN testing –Contact us at sdnlab@incntre.iu.edu to discuss options for performance testingsdnlab@incntre.iu.edu

SDN Users Group Kickoff meeting January 23 rd and 24 th Initial membership Fortune 1K companies By invitation - contact us if you are interested!

Other SDN Uses Commercial products –Offer a router-like CLI RouteFlow – Quagga + OpenFlow FlowScale – Load balancing for IDS cluster Integration with *aaS provisioning Globus Online – provision network resources automatically with GridFTP Data Logistics Toolkit – SDN-enabled network storage
