GeoSciML An international (IUGS) GML3 standard for sharing geologic map information, with examples from Canada and the U.S. Boyan BrodaricGeological Survey of Canada Eric BoisvertGeological Survey of Canada Bruce JohnsonU.S. Geological Survey Simon CoxCSIRO, AU

Outline  Exchanging geologic map information geologic map data interoperability via geospatial web services  Developing a standard GML data format IUGS development of XML data format standard (GeoSciML) and testbed  Future Activities public release and evaluation  DEMO by Bruce Johnson during demo session

Acknowledgements  GeoSciML development team:  Eric Boisvert (GSC)  Boyan Brodaric (GSC)  Tim Duffy (BGS)  Simon Cox (CSIRO)  Bruce Johnson (USGS)  John Laxton (BGS)  Steve Richard (AGS-USGS)  Jean-Jacques Serrano (BRGM)  Bruce Simons (VGS)  Lars Stolen (SE)  Leslie Wyborn (GA)

Motivation  International geologic map data interoperability  availability of technologies for open geospatial standards (OGC, ISO)  commitment of many national data providers to these standards Canada USAUKFrance Germany Korea Japan Denmark Sweden Finland Netherlands AustraliaPolandCzech

ArizonaIdaho Problem  Schematic and semantic map data heterogeneity polysemy synonomy rock type schematic heterogeneity semantic heterogeneity geologic age eonperiodera rock type volcanic

Problem  Schematic and semantic interoperability in OpenGIS? systems syntax schematic semantic interoperability GeoSciML (data structure) GeoOntology (data content, e.g. GEON Map Integrator) Geoscience GML (data language) WFS, WMS, WCS, … (data systems) OpenGIS

Objectives  Geologic map data schematic interoperability  develop a standard GML schema for data transfer in WFS and WMS  conduct a multi-country testbed, including schema translators  demonstrate the need for transfer standards for data content GSC Oracle, ESRI, etc. USGS Oracle, ESRI, etc. Etc. WMS WFS WMS WFS WMS WFS GML Client GSC schema USGS schema other schema GeoSciML

Approach  International consensus  International consortium of major providers of geologic map data  IUGS Commission for Management and Application of Geoscience Info.  Face-to-face meetings and Twiki  Re-use, revise and extend existing standards  GML (OGC)  NADM-GML  XMML  others  Test with COTS* at home agencies  National map databases  Industry partnerships

Approach: GeoSciML design  Conceptual  Logical  Physical GML schema design conceptual model: no GML logical model: GML-UML physical model: XML Granite, syenite, volcanogenic sandstone, conglomerate, minor trachyte lava Mount Leinster Igneous Complex typicalNorm <value codeSpace="http://www.iugs- cgi.org/geologicAgeVocabulary">Triassic <value codeSpace="http://www.iugs- cgi.org/geologicAgeVocabulary">Triassic <value codeSpace="http://www.iugs- cgi.org/geologicAgeEventVocabulary">intrusion physical model: GML-XML UML to GML

Activities: GeoSciML design 1. Kick-off meeting  Nov. 2003, Edinburgh, U.K, at BGS  15 countries represented  agree to share info. using OGC web services  agree to be working group of IUGS-CGI Data Model Collaboration Working Group (DMC WG)  three task groups (TG) created for DMC WG Data Interchange TG: develop GML schema Testbed TG: test GML in WMS, WFS Vocabulary TG: link with thesaurus WG http://www.cgi-iugs.org/

Activities: GeoSciML design 2. Data Interchange Task Group  Dec. 2004, Perth, AU, at CSIRO  reviewed existing models NADM C1, XMML, USGS, BGS, JGS, BRGM, AU,…  geological units, materials, structures, boreholes  initiated 7 teams for new GML development  results: showed Testbed 1 at IAMG05 for WFS boreholes

Activities: GeoSciML design 3. Data Interchange Task Group  Aug. 2005, Ottawa, ON, at GSC  drafted GeoSciML beta  specified Tesbed 2, sharing geologic maps  results: completed GeoSciML 1.0 in Jan. 06 initiated Testbed 2 in Fall, 05

Activities: GeoSciML design 4. Data Interchange Task Group  April 2006, Orleans, FR, at BRGM  drafted GeoSciML 1.1  progress on Tesbed 2  results: GeoSciML 1.1 to be completed May 06 Testbed 2 to be completed Sept. 06

Activities: Testbed 2  Participants GSC (Canada), USGS-MRP (USA), USGS-NGMDB (USA), BGS (UK), BRGM (FR), VGS (AU), GA (AU), SGS (SWE)  Use cases Use case 1: display map, query one feature and return attributes in GeoSciML Use case 2: query several map features and return GeoSciML file for download Use case 3: reclassify map features based on GeoSciML attributes  Status All: in progress Canada, US: completed use case 1and 2

Activities: Testbed 2

Significant Outcomes  GeoSciML adopted as national standard  Australia (federal and state geological surveys)  EU: being submitted to INSPIRE (EU Spatial Data Infrastructure)

Future Activities  GeoSciML Workshop / Session: 6. GeoSciML 1.1 and Testbed 2  September 2006, Liege, BE, IAMG06  public forum for GeoSciML 1.1 and Testbed 2  special session at IAMG06  GeoSciML Task Group meeting: 5. Testbed 2 meeting  Sept 2006, Brussels, BE  make progress on GeoSciML 2.0  review GeoSciML 1.1  GeoSciML from national map database of Canada

 GeoSciML  international collaboration for standard geologic map data format  an application of international geospatial standards (ISO, OGC)  derived from NADM, XMML, and others  to be released as IUGS-CGI standard in 2006  multi-country testbed is in progress  Canada and U.S. contributing to testbed  Web sites  CGI-DMC WG home http://www.bgs.ac.uk/cgi_web/tech_collaboration/data_model/data_model.html  CGI-DMC WG twiki https://www.seegrid.csiro.au/twiki/bin/view/CGIModel/ Summary
