UNC ONLINE OVERVIEW Faculty Assembly – 3/25/2011

Background / Overview  Initiated by President Bowles  “Live” in Fall 2007  online.northcarolina.edu  Central listing of  Online programs  Online courses  Model = “Recruit & Direct”  Advertising & awareness vehicle  Funnel students to campus resources  Added services for existing UNC students in subsequent years  Inter-institutional registration (Fall 2008)  Exam Proctoring Network (Fall 2010)

Organization / Hierarchy UNC Online Prospective Students Programs (redirect to & enroll at campus) Courses (redirect to & enroll at campus) Existing UNC Students & Faculty Inter-institutional Registration Exam Proctoring Network E-Mentoring Network (coming soon) online.northcarolina.edu services.northcarolina.edu

Prospective Students: Analysis  Benefits to students  Consolidated listing of all programs  Can get direct contact to individual programs for more information / assistance.  Difficulties to students  No cohesive interface for comparing programs “Recruit and direct” model means students must navigate through multiple campus websites each with varying degrees of information.  No ability to enroll in a program directly Again, the student must navigate the campus website and admissions process, which is non-uniform across the system  No ability to register for courses directly Again, the student must navigate the “non-degree seeking” admissions process at each campus.  Difficult to calculate the “cost” of a program/course due to the various tuition models in use across the system.

Inter-institutional Registration  Electronic workflow between registrar’s offices  Home campus policies require signatures/paper trail for approvals  Student pays tuition at the visited campus  Can be incorporated into financial aid package at home campus Student Requests Home Campus Approves Visited Campus Approves Home Campus Acknowledges

Inter-Inst. Registration: Analysis  Not been widely “advertised” to the student population  Average of 107 requests per semester  Trending upward  Outcomes  28% - Successful registrations  26% - Denied by Home (policy issues)  27% - Denied by Visited (capacity issues)  19% - Cancelled/Dropped Requests per Semester

Exam Proctoring  Ensuring Quality  Student taking test = Student receiving degree  Minimize cheating  Strengthen the perception of the online degrees  Compliance with Higher Education Act of 2008  Identity proofing of online students is now showing up in SACS accreditation process  Partnership with ECU  ECU staff member provides oversight for entire system  Decentralized expertise coupled with centralized efficiency  Centralized development & deployment at General Administration  Write once, deploy everywhere  Effective, efficient, consistent

Exam Proctoring: Without Network Student 1 Faculty Student 2 Student 30 Proctor 30 Proctor 2 Proctor 1 ……  Scenario:  1 Course section with  1 Exam for  30 Students with  30 Proctors  Faculty:  Approve 30 proctors  Send exam 30 times  Proctors:  Approved multiple times by different faculty  Students:  Same proctor must be approved by multiple faculty

Exam Proctoring: With Network  Scenario:  1 Course section with  1 Exam for  30 Students with  30 Proctors  Faculty:  Approve 0 proctors  Send exam 1 time  Proctors:  Approved once for all of UNC  Students:  No need for proctor approval Student 1 Faculty Student 2 Student 30 Proctor 30 Proctor 2 Proctor 1 Academic Service Portal …… Proctor Admin (ECU)
