Transmission Oil Pump Audit Test Stand Project Overview

Who We Worked With ATA Inc. was approached by a client with a need to retrofit and modernize an existing Transmission Oil Pump Audit Test Stand The client was among the industry leaders in the production of engine and transmission oil pumps for the automotive sector The client had established test procedures for numerous pump designs, and wanted to develop a common platform among all pump test stands, so they would be fully interchangeable In addition to being used for auditing purposes of production oil pumps, the new test stand design would also need to incorporate features for verifying new models designs, as well as running durability testing

ATA began by analyzing the client’s current product lineup, in order to determine the design parameter envelope in terms of the test fluid, operating speed, outlet pressure, outlet flow, and oil temperature Through a careful component selection process, ATA was able to satisfy the client’s need to reduce the mechanical footprint of the test stands, creating a more open layout in their test lab environment ATA proposed a solution to satisfy all of the client’s requirements in a timely manner, due to the client’s need for urgent oil pump validation for a high-volume product Tailored To Specific Needs

Key Design Elements Major modifications and upgrades done to the test stand included: o replacement of 8 pre-programmed digital speed setpoints with analog motor speed control o replacement of 6 discrete restriction orifice plates with a continuous pressure globe control valve o development of a universal fixture interface to match all other oil pump test stands within customer test lab o switch from a PLC controller to a PC based control system Design of a new aluminum extrusion safety bracket, with a sliding front door for fast access to test bay area Development of a simple manual part clamping mechanism for quick part interchanges For technical info regarding the test bench, see datasheet

Productivity & Expandability ATA was able to develop and transfer equivalent test code on ATA’s software platform to replace client’s existing PLC code, which allowed the client to add functionality at their discretion Client started developing test scripts with custom OEM specifications to measure performance of other pump models, without the need for ATA staff’s assistance Client was now able to derive full pressure-flow profiles for the entire operating RPM range Creation of a closed-loop speed feedback system, by means of interfacing a dedicated inductive speed pick-up sensor, provided much improved performance over the previous open-loop system

Superior Efficiency Sophisticated software features provide automatic test selection and execution, based on detecting the appropriate fixture that is represented by binary-coded proximity switches Client’s plan to test new product lines to the same OEM test specifications did not require any additional programming, rather just an update to the existing test script set points Added functionality of PID pressure and temperature control provided the client with the ability to test the pump performance at virtually any operating conditions Universal diamond and cone type locating pins created a standard frame of reference for the universal mounting fixture, allowing any type of custom pump fixture to interface to it

Making Sense Of The Data After automatic raw data generation from pre-written test scripts, client was able to retrieve items such as: o pressure vs. flow curves for continuous RPM values o temperature vs. pressure drop for open flow conditions o internal pressure relief value for closed restriction condition Ability to program custom RPM profiles and acceleration rates, while maintaining PID pressure control, provided simulation of field-type operating conditions Automated test scripts are able to check and report whether minimum flow conditions are satisfied at various pressures, and if pressure targets are reached at specific RPM values

Project Milestones The full scope of the project was delivered on time, while ATA continued to support the client, especially during the early stages of their adaptation to the new test stand layout and environment Upon project completion, all documentation needed for service and maintenance of the test stand was released to the client: o electrical, hydraulic and pneumatic drawings o mechanical drawings of custom fixtures and spare parts o comprehensive test stand and software manuals Proposal to full design time: 3 weeks Old test stand tear-down time: 2 weeks New test stand build time: 2 weeks On-site setup to test results time: 2 days
