State Recreational Trails - Eligible projects

Land acquisition Trail surfacing, resurfacing, rehabilitation, modernization, upgrading and reconstruction, including pavement repairs and overlays and shoulder widening and stabilization Bridge and culvert repair, Roadway intersection and interchange improvements, including warranted traffic signalization that is an integral part of the project. Construction or improvement of rest areas, information centers, waysides, permanent interpretive displays, lighting and rest rooms, including the costs of utility connections Design engineering and construction inspection costs Storm drainage and storm sewer Utility relocation costs Trail signs, fencing, landscaping, parking areas, and walkways. 75/25 Federal-Local Match

Federal Recreational Trails - Eligible projects

Maintaining and restoration of existing trails; Development and rehabilitation of trailside and trailhead facilities and trail linkages; Purchase and lease of trail construction and maintenance equipment; Construction of new trails (with restrictions for new trails on Federal lands); Acquisition of easements or property for trails; Operation of educational programs to promote safety and environmental protection related to trails (limited to 5 percent of a state’s funds). These funds are intended for recreational trails. They may not be used to improve roads for general passenger vehicle use or to provide shoulders or sidewalks along roads.

Enhancements - Eligible projects

The 12 eligible activities are: Facilities for pedestrians and bicyclists; Safety and educational activities for pedestrians and bicyclists; Acquisition of scenic easements and scenic or historic sites; Scenic or historic highway programs (including the provision of tourist and welcome center facilities); Landscaping and other scenic beautification; Historic preservation; Rehabilitation and operation of historic transportation Buildings, structures, or facilities Preservation of abandoned railway corridors Control and removal of outdoor advertising; Archaeological planning and research; Environmental mitigation to address water pollution due to highway runoff or reduce vehicle-caused wildlife Establishment of transportation museums.

General Implementation… Application Deadline - October 1 90 Days to evaluate and score applications 60 Day - information to commission for approval 100-200 Days for inclusion into TIP/STIP, Environmental Review, Agreement Development and FHWA Authorization. Application Reimbursable charges are allowed after FHWA authorization – Generally 1 year after application submittals
