 Toys of the 1950’s

 Mr. Potato Head Mr. Potato Head was “born” in 1952 in Pawtucket, Rhode Island when Hasboro, INC. began producing them. It made toy history by being the first toy advertised on television. It was originally produced with an actual potato as a body and plastic parts for the face, but in 1960 a plastic body was introduced to eliminate the need for a real potato. http://www.figures.com/forums/attachments/news/4621d1270044397-thinkway-toy-story-collection-mr-potato-head-mrpotatohead_09.jpg

 Chatty Cathy Chatty Cathy was “born” in 1959 when Mattel, INC. began producing them. She made toy history by being the first successful talking doll. The voice of Chatty Cathy changed many times, but she was once voiced by Maureen McCormick from the Brady Bunch! http://cjlutz.tripod.com/CCreproRed.jpg

 Matchbox Cars The matchbox car was “born” in 1952 when Jack Odell made a small steamroller for his daughter to bring to school. They made toy history by being one of the first toys cheap enough to be purchased by children, and not by their parents. Although some of the cars were generally simple, some of the more advanced cars had more than 100 parts! http://www.flickr.com/photos/clampants/4228128433/

 Play-Doh Play-Doh was “born” in 1956 when Noah McVicker and Joseph McVicker began manufacturing the dough and selling it. Play-Doh made toy history when its 500 MILLIONTH can was sold only 16 years after its initial release. Although Play-Doh has been around for 56 years, the recipe for it remains top secret. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/2/2a/Play-Doh_Original_Canister.jpg/200px-Play-Doh_Original_Canister.jpg

 Barbie The Barbie doll was “born” in 1959 when Ruth Handler, who was a co-founder of Mattel, INC., began making them. Barbie made toy history when 300,000 of the dolls were sold in the first year of release. Barbie was named after the inventor’s daughter, Barbara. http://miaamber.files.wordpress.com/2009/11/barbie.jpg?w=450

 Wooly Willy Wooly Willy was “born” in 1955. James Herzog found that the magnetic dust produced by his work could be used to make a toy. Wooly Willy made toy history by being inducted into a list of the 40 most popular toys produced from 1950-1980. When first invented, noone would purchase the toy because they thought it was a poor concept. However, it soon caught on and became incredibly popular. http://pazeinteractive.com/2010/images/wooly-willy-512.png

 Yahtzee Yahtzee was “born” in 1954 when a Canadian couple invented the game for something to do while on their yacht. Yahtzee still makes toy history today; more than 50 million games are sold annually. Yahtzee was originally called “The Yacht Game” but the name was eventually changed. http://www.thewarehouse.co.nz/is-bin/intershop.static/WFS/TWL-B2C-Site/TWL-B2C/en_NZ/product/large/9414076045024_l.jpg

 Skateboard The skateboard doesn’t have a sole inventor. Rather, the skateboard was “born” around 1950 when multiple towns created the board to recreate the feeling of surfing. The skateboard made toy history by creating a sport that is still enjoyed today; professional skateboarding! The original skateboards looked more like scooters, but the handles were eventually removed to create the board we all know today. http://comp.webstockpro.com/corbis2/42-20829066.jpg
