2 1) New Frontier p.627 President JFK’s domestic program from 1961-1963, which aimed to increase support for education, antipoverty programs, and medical care for the elderly; cut taxes; raise the minimum wage; ban racial discrimination; and increase defense spending.

3 2) NASA p.629 National Aeronautics and Space Administration A government agency established in 1958 for the research and development of space exploration vehicles and projects

4 3) Bay of Pigs Invasion p. 630 An invasion of Cuba in 1961, which was authorized by JFK for the purpose of overthrowing Castro’s regime, organized by the CIA, executed by Cuban Exiles, and defeated by Castro’s forces.

5 4) Berlin Wall p. 631 A concrete wall that the communist East German government erected in 1961 to cut off West Berlin from the rest of East Germany and prevent East Germans from escaping into democratic West Berlin; the wall stood until 1989.

6 5) Cuban Missile Crisis p. 632 A confrontation between the United States and the Soviet Union in fall of 1962 over the building of Soviet missile- launching sites in Cuba, in response to which the U.S. established a quarantine to prevent Soviet ships from transporting missiles to Cuba and to demand withdraw of all Soviet weapons from the island; after a few days, the Soviet Union agreed to withdraw its missiles and JFK agreed not to invade.

7 6) Peace Corps p. 633 A government agency created by JFK in 1961 to send skilled volunteers to developing nations to support their local communities in areas such as education, agriculture, health, technology, and community development.

8 7) Test Ban Treaty p. 633 An agreement signed by the United States, Soviet Union, and Great Britain in 1963 to ban nuclear testing in the atmosphere but allow underground testing.

After your group writes your paragraph (each person is responsible for one of the assigned parts), we will separate the class into two groups: FOR and AGAINST JFK’s presidency.

When time begins (you will have 4 minutes), you will get in a straight line and each person will write one fact that supports your theory about JFK.
