3 Overall Objectives of ORSP Improve the quantity and quality of all types of research, scholarship and creative work at CMU Help faculty members secure increased external support by: o Alerting faculty to funding opportunities for research and programmatic activities o Doing targeted fund searching of databases for faculty (SPIN/SMARTS) o Offering grant writing workshops o Assisting faculty with budget preparation and grant submissions o Helping faculty form research communities to seek major funding o Assist faculty in filing patents and seeking licensing opportunities o Providing and managing an array of internal funds to serve as seed sources for both scholarship and external grant seeking o Providing matching money for acquisition of major instruments o Providing undergraduate funds for assisting faculty on projects Help publicize internally and externally the scholarly, creative, research and service activities of CMU’s faculty, staff and students Office of Research and Sponsored Programs

4 Internal Funding Programs ORSP competitions o Early Career (EC) o New Research Initiative (NRI) o Creative and Scholarly Support (CSS) Research Incentive Awards (RIA) Proposal match (together with colleges and departments) Undergraduate support o Summer scholars o Research and Creative Endeavors o Presentation VP Discretionary funds Faculty Research and Creative Endeavors (FRCE) Office of Research and Sponsored Programs

5 FRCE Funding Faculty Committee appointed by Academic Senate o Premier Display -- presentations at national meetings o Research Type A and B ($3,500 and $8,000 maximum) o Page Charge $204,800 base budget Portion F&A recovered (approx $80k) may be used to augment FRCE funds Office of Research and Sponsored Programs
