Chemistry of Light Lab Materials and Supplies: Do you have your colored pencils ? Do you have your PRE-LAB QUESTIONS ?
2
Atoms All atoms consist of three parts: – Protons, neutrons, and electrons – The numbers of these particles determine the type of element
3
Radiation When electrons become energized under certain conditions, they jump from one energy level to another This can result in the release of radiation, or the production of light. – The color of the light emitted is determined by the particular element present.

Spectroscopy This week in lab, you will use a spectrometer. A spectrometer is a tool that splits light into the colors of the visible light spectrum. You will use this to observe light from different sources. The color of light that is shown by the spectrometer will show you which elements are present in the light source!

MORE Spectroscopy Each element has a fingerprint in the visible light spectrum – This means that the color of the light that you see can tell you what element(s) are responsible for the light emitted! The light from stars can be viewed through a spectrometer and scientists can determine which elements are present in the stars!
