Species 2000: Recent Developments Rainer Froese Institute of Marine Research, Kiel rfroese@ifm.uni-kiel.de

New `Annual Checklist´ 5 Kingdoms (e.g. Allexivirus) 260,000 Species 420,000 Synonyms 180,000 Common Names 90,000 References 18 Contributing Databases New field “Distribution“ http://202.164.190.102/sp2002/search.cfm

Common Names Main access to species information Get them into Name Service Improve matching (search for `Tiger´ should find the cat before the fish) Explore `did you mean...´ approach Include non-Latin scripts 嚴公仔 http://www.fishbase.org/search.cfm

New Developments Bring together Sp2000, ITIS and NCBI (Sydney meeting) NSF proposal for development of tools to implement unified Name Service for use by, e.g., GenBank, BIOSIS, FAO, IUCN, CBD, Species Analyst, GTI,... OBIS has online prototype http://iobis.org/OBISPortal/

Environmental Modelling for Plain Mortals New approach: Index online databases LifeMapper: GARP analysis on distributed screen savers www.lifemapper.org www.lifemapper.org WhyWhere http://biodi.sdsc.edu/ww_home.html..\..\..\Temp\Kyoto\WhyWhere.pdf

Collection Databases in FishBase Index to 15 fish collections, over 1 million records Standardization of species, countries, areas, coordinates, dates Links and `Pings´ to contributing databases Efforts to link to analytical tools www.fishbase.org/SearchFishCollections.cfm

Two Approaches for Contributions from the Public Upload observations of species (e.g. FishWatcher) FishWatcher Attach your website to the Name Service (e.g. FishBase self-registered sites)self-registered sites

Vision for User Interface (1) 1.User enters common name or scientific name (1st click) 2.Name Service helps with correct species selection (2nd click) 3.Name Service creates list of unambigous synonyms and spellings 4.List of names is searched in central Collection Index

Vision for User Interface (2) 5.Point data are retrieved from Collection Index 6.Default map is created and returned to user 7.User can verify, delete and add points and redo map 8.User submits points to online environmental modelling

Tasks for Sp2000 AO Contribute GSDs to Name Service Provide common names for Sp2000, including non-Latin scripts Provide point data for OBIS and Species Analyst (or create own, similar network) Provide entrypoint for Asian databases Participate in online modelling (super- computers, models, environmental data sets)

Thank You
