From the homepage you can jump to any of the specific content sections by: Clicking on that section’s tab You can perform a search of the entire site or narrow your search to any of the specific content sections. One of the nice features of MD Consult is the fact that the system understands abbreviations and acronyms such as “MI” and will search for the intended term, Myocardial Infarction, as well. Let’s start by running a search of the entire site for “MI”.

6. There are over 50 leading medical reference “Books” available. Once you are at the Books’ homepage you will notice that they are listed by specialty, and can also be listed alphabetically. New editions and new titles will be noted in the list.

Journals and Clinics have been separated into two tabbed sections for your convenience, and you can perform an advanced search on either section. The search options provide simple but flexible ways to refine your search. The full-text of these leading medical journals and Clinics are available online, along with abstracts and citations for all journals in MEDLINE®.

8. “Patient Education”, contains more than 10,000 patient handouts available within MD Consult. You can conduct a search or browse by Condition & Treatment, Medication, Specialty or by handouts available in Spanish. Patient handouts can be customized to include specific contact information as well as special instructions, specific to a patient.

9. “Drug” information includes generic and brand name drugs, investigational medications, nutraceuticals and nutritional products. Your search can be narrowed by drug names, indications or contraindications. We also include safety notices and FDA approvals when announced by the FDA or a specific drug manufacturer.

The next section is “Guidelines” which includes links to full-text clinical practice guideline articles published in the journals on MD Consult, plus links to additional full-text guidelines from professional and government agencies available via the Web. You can browse by Topic, Specialty, or Authoring Organization.

11. “Images” lets you search from over 50,000 high-quality images from the textbooks available on MD Consult. You can simply view the image, take a look at it in the book to see where the image occurs within the original text or compare up to 4 images at a time.

12. MD Consult “News” is updated daily and provides concise clinical summaries on new developments from all major journals, government agencies, and medical conferences. The news is provided by “Elsevier Global Medical News” and MD Consult Editorial staff.

15. You will see the link to get to First Consult at the beginning of the tabbed section across the top of MD Consult. You can search through just the content in First Consult by selecting First Consult in the pull down menu and typing your search term and hit search. You can also browse through the available content by selecting one of the three content tabs. They are separated into Medical Topics, Differential Diagnoses and Procedures. Within each tabbed section the topics are listed alphabetically by title.

The first tab is Medical Topics, which provide comprehensive coverage of medical conditions, from evaluation and diagnosis to treatment and management, Supported with evidence and detailed references. After you have selected a medical topic, the information presented to you is written in a manor that follows the physicians' normal work flow, and can include the following: summary, background, treatment, outcomes, prevention, and resources.

17. By selecting a chief complaint, you will be presented with a diagnostic table. The diagnostic tables are sorted by age and then by prevalence from most to least common. Items displayed with a red asterisks (*) should be ruled out urgently. You can get a quick breakdown of some conditions by clicking on the title of the condition. You can also compare several conditions by selecting the boxes in front of those conditions and hit compare. This will pull up a page with all of the selected conditions on it with the quick breakdown of each one, making it easy to find the correct diagnoses. The next section in First Consult is Differential Diagnoses. Differential Diagnoses provides a rapid evaluation of your patient's complaint with interactive access to potential diagnoses ordered by age and prevalence. Differential Diagnoses allow you to work back from signs and symptoms, or chief complaints, to more than 1,800 individual diagnoses, all of which are summarized for rapid review.

18. The last section is Procedures, which provides clear systematic guidance, including videos, step-by-step action points, evidence- based management guidelines and clinical pearls of procedures integral to the practice of medicine across many specialties. Procedure topics provide information on surgical and diagnostic procedures commonly performed in an inpatient or outpatient setting. Procedure articles feature video clips, still images, animations, and illustrations, as well as detailed information in the accompanying text.
