The choice is yours ” – Mr. Tranum Learning Targets: (L.8.6) I can acquire and use vocabulary appropriate for eighth grade content. -(SL.8.1c) I can pose questions that connect the ideas of several speakers and respond to them with relevant evidence. -(L8.1) I can demonstrate an 8 th grade level of command of standard grammar and usage when writing or speaking.

3 New seats! Rules Rules: There must be 2 new people in your group. You must move to the opposite side of the room. No talking: use non-verbal cues to communicate. No running or pushing. 1 2 3 GO.

4 NEW VOCABULARY !! NEW VOCABULARY !! Go to your VOCAB. Section Independent Clause: ???????? Dependent Clause: ?????????? – (work in pairs) – ONE person from each pair get a Writer’s Choice book. – Look up Clauses and find the definition of both independent and dependent clauses.

6 DO NOW DO NOW 5 min. In your write book : (Page 5? ) Write each sentence. Label the independent and dependent clauses. Circle the independent and underline the dependent. 1.Though he was very rich, he was still very unhappy. 2.She returned the computer after she noticed it was damaged. 3.Wherever you go, you can always find beauty. 4.When she was younger, she believed in fairy tales.

7 THEN 1.Class Check ! 1.Clear your desk of everything except your write book. 2.Put your pencil under your desk. 3.Use a highlighter, maker, or pen to grade. 1.Highlighters are at the student center if you need one. 4. for correct and X for incorrect. 5.Volunteers will label the clauses on the dry erase board. 6.We will decide if they are correct as a class.

8 New Vocab : Compound sentence : ???????????? –Use a device to find the definition. –Everyone writes it in the VOCAB. Section –Report the definition to the class. –Draw a stick person representation of both complex and compound sentences. ( HINT ) Think about the different clauses and if they can or cannot stand alone.
