1 Vehicle Scale Conversions
February 2014

2 Today‘s Situation ..equals a growth opportunity.
Market for new Vehicle scales is not growing or saturated Due to long-life cycle of Vehicle scales and lower investments Thousands of old but (mechanically) robust Vehicle scales are still in use Due to heavy-duty designs used in the past Old Vehicle scales not very accurate and expensive to maintain Due to old weighing technology (load cells and/or lever systems) Old technology does not hold accuracy METTLER TOLEDO POWERCELL PDX Launch Gives us the opportunity to grow our business, especially service Change the scale brand with a new MT Terminal Chance to sell more than just the terminal Conversions yield more profit than new scale sales Old Vehicle scales not very accurate….  These issues leading to the idea of having Conversion Kits. Or maybe you will also hear the terms: „revamping“ / „upgrading“ / retrofitting“ = installing new weighing system Go out and grow the business!

3 METTLER TOLEDO Load Cell Range
Analog Load Cell POWERCELL MTX POWERCELL PDX Capacities 25t, 45t 25t, 45t, 90t 20t, 30t, 50t, 90t Communication analog RS485, Bitbus CANbus, open Output 0 – 30mV 0 – 100,000 cts 0 – 500,000 cts Update rate [Instrument specific] 15 per second 40 per second Performance NTEP and OIML C3 NTEP and OIML - C3 C4 NTEP and OIML – C3 C4 C6 Junction Box Required Not Required Typical LC Life 3-5 years 8+ years Advantages Low initial cost High accuracy, Environmental protection, Quick disconnect Highest accuracy, Long life, Environ protection, No J-box required Disadvantages Low accuracy, environmental susceptibility, reliability High initial cost, junction box interconnection High initial cost

4 Customer pain and future pain
…motivates customers to buy POWERCELL PDX conversions Pain = downtime, customer complaints, high repair bills, lost revenue, unbudgeted expenses caused by: Load cells that are mechanically at the end of life = mechanical problems Load cell suspension systems at the end of life = more mechanical problems Load cells which have been struck by lightning = potential future failure Load cells/suspension systems are hard to clean = frequent maintenance Corrosion causing water ingress = high repair and recalibration Cables that are broken, cut or leaking = accuracy problems, intermittent failures. Junction boxes with failed components, water and corrosion = instability/uncertainty Approval problems and non-compliance to quality systems, i.e., verification problems Out of date electronics….”won’t work with our IT system” Lead-in: Details to motivate customer POWERCELL PDX = no pain Full stainless steel construction No Junction boxes Predictive diagnostics No failures Warranty to back it up

5 VKR211 Results Over 120 Shipped in 2013
Over $300K in PO revenue on Engineer to Order kits alone Similar growth patterns around the world

6 Vehicle Scale Upgrade Kit
POWERCELL POWERCELL PDX POWERCELL load cell technology is not brand new. It has been around since the 1980s. Today, there are roughly 1 million POWERCELL load cells installed around the globe. The original POWERCELL was the first to convert the analog weight to a digital signal within the load cell canister. Over the last 20 years, POWERCELL technology has continued to evolve and improve. The latest evolution provides the highest accuracy available along with unequaled reliability. POWERCELL MTX 1999 Over 1,000,000 Legacy MT Load Cells to be upgraded!

9 VKR21x Conversion Kits Non-specific kits from MTMS (USA) can be used in every instance VKR210 with POWERCELL MTX VKR211 with POWERCELL PDX You get everything you see here in the picture!

10 Analysis of VKR211 Conversion Kit
Design idea of VKR211 Conversion Kit Designed for any kind of truckscale (incl. lever scale) Parts have various holes for mounting to existing scale Downside of Standard VKR211 Conversion Kit Normally a lot of adjustment work to be done, e.g.: New risers have to be created Receiver plate need to be welded Foundation has be adjusted (new piers) Adjustment works to be done on-site (under weighbridge)  which results it time-intensive and expensive conversion project  Idea of providing Customised Conversion Kits

11 Examples: Installing a VKR210 Conv. Kit
Example 1: Existing lever system New upper receiver plate welded on Stack-up with locating tool and riser Example 2: Existing lever system Build-up of concrete pier Installing VKR210 on new concrete pier

21 Avery Weigh-Tronix to PDX
Weighbar ® POWERCELL ® PDX® Load Load The AWTS sales force is taught to promote the weight on the load cell in an effort to convey longer life and a more robust design. What they don't tell the customer is that this additional weight is required because the load is being transmitted through a lever. AWT may argue the cell is heavier. It must be heavier otherwise it would fail earlier. This lever action also has an adverse effect on the “potting” that seals the gauge area. The more bending the more likely the cell’s potting will delaminate from the cover allowing moisture and water to wick in. Load bending stress No bending stress

25 Vehicle Scale Upgrades & Conversions
Case Study: Anheuser-Busch brewery Opportunity: 2 inbound scales (8 LC's), 2 multi-axle out-bound (14 LC's) Fairbanks scales Reliability issues: 1) Lightning strike ($20K repair). 2) water in j-boxes. 3) flooding. 4) anti-rotation problems 5) multiplexer board failures. PDX Conversion proposal: PDX System, IND560, 5 year warranty ROI justification: 1) Each incident costs A-B $15 to 20K. 2) Scale inaccuracy (+/-1200 lb) causes re-work of trucks. Installation: 1-1/2 days per scale to convert
